I think (again IMO) for most it's:

1) The reverse of what you said: They want a more P-Bass like quality to the low/low-mids, but with the slimmer J-Bass neck
2) an aesthetic choice, preferring the J's styling more to the P

+1 Yup. For me, I prefer the neck feel and body ergonomics of the J-bass, but I like what the P-pickup brings to the equation, tonally (especially when solo'd).

And I love the looks, personally, which is of course what matters (at least with regard to my own personal basses).

I can't help it. I spent 15 years as a designer in a previous life. And I still can't lose the... I dunno. Impulse, I guess? reflex? I dunno, but aesthetics play a heavy role for me. Not a make-or-break role, but a heavy one.

The coils have to be the same size in order to hum cancel 100%!

So *that's* why so many 5ver P pickups are like that. I was wondering. So I wonder what Fender did with theirs? It seems pretty quiet to me. I'm thinking that popping the cover off and looking around inside might wreck my warranty, so I'll just have to let the mystery live, I think.

The photo above also makes me wonder: Do a lot of guys opt for the reverse P setup? It seems like a fabulous idea to me--but I'm never sure if the differences and such that we tend to get steamed up about here on TB are even noticeable to anyone who isn't wearing the bass in question. And I'm saying that as someone who's gotten steamed up about some pretty nuanced stuff...

Pure aesthetics and totally IMO. Obviouslly, lots of guys love that look. I'm kind of more 'if you want a P, do a P, if you want a J do a J'. PURE IMO there! I was being a little tongue in cheek in response to guys agonizing over tuner posts, etc.!

I feel ya on that (yea I had to to that tuner post thing too), but I wanted a P, got the P, wanted a J, got the J, now I want the PJ so umm...yea :-D

The Low end is "quicker" and more focused along the lines of the 24 fret bass with soaps. More modern if you will. The G string also balanced better, IMO -- was was less thin.

Yeah, it seems that whenever someone shows off a reverse P by any maker, the thread in question starts jumping. There wasn't one at the Sadowsky shop when I was there in July, I don't think. Otherwise, I'd have spent significant time on it to see for myself.

Anything that will thicken up the G string is pure magic, as far as I'm concerned.

I have a NYC rev PJ5 and a modded PJ (non rev.) Lakie (I know, I know, apples & oranges...). with similar Nordstrand PUs. Nevertheless I think I can compare both configs (being aware of the scale difference, etc....)
The regular config seems fatter on the low strings whereas the reverse config sounds more balanced over the low and high strings.

Honestly, I don't know which one I prefer!!
Maybe it's time for a regular Sadowsky PJ 5 string...

Well, this beauty lives at my house now. Played it the last couple of weeks, and I REALLY like the Sadowsky soapbars in jazz position. Although they have a great and very usable sound in a mix, I've always found the pickup placement on the Moderns a little too Smith-ish and one-dimensional for my tastes, and have passed on all three I have owned previously to new homes. This bass seems to me to have the best of both worlds: the modern clarity of the soaps nestled in a fuller, rounder overall tone produced by the more central pickup location. I can still get as much extra mids as I need by favoring the bridge pickup just a smidge, which is how I have run it so far.

Call me crazy (you won't be the first) but this bass almost has some P-bass grindy goodness underneath those modernish trappings. I don't really understand that, but I swear that's what it sounds like in the Aviom mix. Will have to get the wireless out next rehearsal and walk around the house a little to get a sense of how it sounds out there.

HaHa - I've never seen a KJ post without an "IMO" in it!
And rightly so, this is all IMO stuff.

Before I ordered my J5 I asked KJ some questions as well as Roger and Kevin and they've all been very helpful.

I chose a JJ and not a PJ so didn't get the "reverse" problem. Does it affect anything other than the 'B' string?

I chose ebony for the board with an alder body which not everyone can understand.

I chose quilted top and a tort p/g which also isn't everyone's choice.

I got as much knowledge as I could and then made a choice.
I'm happy.

My "almost here" 4 string is again ebony on alder, this time with "JP" pups (not reversed or shortened) on a plain burst finish.

My "perfect basses" - IMO!

I had a good run with mine, but eventually, I just needed something with a bigger soundscape and a rounder low end. Just couldn't get there with the 24-Fret 5.

You're not crazy... I've heard the same thing before in similarly configured basses, and even with the 24-Fret 5/Moderns if you solo the neck pickup. I think others have commented on it as well.

The weird thing to me is that it has that character even when slightly dialed toward the bridge - I guess the pickup placement really has that much effect. It sure sounds good in the mix.

Good to know that I've retained at least a few of my marbles.
