It has the Nordstrand pup, so it's pretty hot, but I usually do run the preamp with the bass boosted just a bit (less than I boost on my Sadowsky J).
Long story short: Blackie has been my #1 since I got her in April of 2005. Last year I got Red and Whitey to help shoulder the load.
Long story long: I can't really speak to the differences between Blackie and Red, as I've always kept rounds on Blackie and Red has mostly sported flats, but they're both awesome basses. I wouldn't necessarily recommend Sadowsky (any type) to someone with picky ears looking for the vintage Fender tone -- they are Sadowskys and not Fenders, after all -- but they get vintage enough for my ears. The main reasons I prefer Sadowsky to Fender (or any other brand): gorgeous playability, notes are amazingly even from down low to up high (minimal to nonexistent dead spots), tight tone that sounds great clean or dirty, bright or warm, and of course build quality that is second to none.

Here's Blackie strung with DR Neons (coated rounds). Please forgive the sloppy unprepared noodling... this video was taken as we were demoing TalkBasser Jonathan Reiner's all-tube preamp. The tone is kinda dirty, but that's the way I like it.

Thanks , I know what you mean , I have a standard 5 ash/ maple for 10 years now , it is a great bass , I am sure the P bass is amazing as well , I am trying hard to fund up in the next couple of days for one that is for sale overseas , we will see what happens , love to get my hands on it , we will see how things pan out , thanks for the help

Two questions...Went by the new shop today...... Its really nice! However what was really really nice was 5803!!!!!!! Man that place is really not good if you have low self control!
Did you mean 5804? Because 5803 is not on the site, so we can't see what you're talking about if 5803 is correct.

Oh! How I wish! Kevin said it should be on the site soon. Its 4 string Will Lee with a quilted maple top on an alder body with a madagascar rosewood board!

When you guys track through a DI direct to the board with your Sadowskys, do you usually bump the on board bass, or record with the preamp flat?
Whether playing live or recording, I boost the bass on my Sadowsky preamp about 25% and boost the treble slightly if the tune dictates it. I run my DI pre-eq.

I do this as well. I have food that the OB bass boost is more natural and musical than boosting either on the amp's controls or the board even if you select the same frequency centers. Not sure why, but it seems so to me.
On the other hand, I very rarely use the treble boost. With clean SS rounds, every Sadowsky I have owned is PLENTY bright for my tastes flat.
I am DI and mixing in a touch of cab in the studio right now. Even 80/20 DI has little more interest to my ears than straight up DI.
Cool thanks guys. I tracked two songs the other night and went with no bass/treble boost, favored the bridge on one song, and went with both pickups dimmed on the other song. I'll boost some bass on the next couple songs. I don't think I'll have to worry about boosting treble because of fairly fresh bright nickels and a single coil/ash/maple combo.
