I was surprised because the neck was straighter than what I was used to, I was always under the impression you wanted no more than .015" relief, when I checked the Sadowsky it was at about .008"

I wanted to lower the action to about 2mm so I wondered if I could straighten the neck just a tad bit more (1/4 turn) and then proceed to lower the action.

So I did, and then I did... and it turned out incredible.

Right now, I'm measuring about .005" relief (measured at the 8th fret holding down the string on the 1st and 21st fret)

and I have the action at about 2mm (measured at the 17th fret)

I made these adjustments about 5 days ago and then re-measured today to see if anything relaxed/adjusted on it's own and everything is still the same. The bass came from New York to dry and warm Arizona.

All that to say, I'm really liking the feel of this setup and I'm wondering if there's any downside to having the neck as straight as I do? I thought I heard Roger state in an interview once that he always wants to start his setups with as straight a neck as possible and then move on from there.

This bass is just killin' in every category so far.

I don't think there's any issues with the relief being outside "normal" parameters. As long as it sets up as you prefer, it's "right."

I can't stress enough, or repeat myself enough, that everyone should learn to do their own setups. It's NOT AT ALL hard, and there is no "wrong answer". Just whatever works best for the player, is "right".

Instruments and their setups are JUST as personalized as we are individuals, and that's the way it should be. :)

He is right I just did one of mine the other day. Not hard at all.
Gotta get more Blue Label SS strings.....down to my last pack!

Just a point of interest while on the topic of setup. In an old article about Roger & his thoughts on the subject, I read that Marcus used to have his action set extremely low but realized that the bass didn't "speak" very well that way & that raising it a bit gave him a wider range of articulation.
It's like that cliche : high pup set= volume - lower pup set =tone. But again - each to his own I guess.
Left hand damping technique has a bearing I find as well on setup. Will Lee has a pencil neck for a reason. He wraps his whole hand around & has higher action to achieve what he feels gives better damping & note articulation I think. Lots to consider.

I made a copy of that article, I think there was Will Lee and Jason Newstead? The first thing I do when a new bass arrives is set it as low as I can so's I know what it's capable of.
My PJ4 needs lifting a bit as I hit things a bit harder when with a band and a bit of the "plummy'ness" disappears when too low.
For some reason the J5 stays as low as I can get it - maybe I'm gentler with 5.

Thanks Steve, but I was interested in the rack itself. I have never seen an all-black SKB. I guess they are heavy duty racks, then.

I like it low-"ish" but not ridiculous.

I like it "Vic" height. I normally tweak a bass for while to get it the wait I want it. With both basses I have gotten from Vic, I tool them out of the case and said "this is just fine."

Maybe when I become famous he can tech for me. Although at this point, I don't recommend him giving up his day job.

I know most of us Sadowsky owners are Jazz and PJ guys it seems , who out there has a Sadowsky P bass and can comment , I am really trying hard to get one a guy has for sale overseas , I am sure they are as great as the jazz and pj,s just don't hear much about them on theses threads , thanks and a great special day to you all !

Sadowsky P bass? Do not hesitate! I've had this for a couple of years now. I will NEVER sell this bass. It's that good...
