Thanks all for the compliments! I went back to my order sheet and figured this out. First off, it IS maple burl. You would think I would know that since it IS my bass an all… :rollno:

Second, the body shape is a Telecaster with a body contour on the back side. I had wanted a copy of Tom Hamilton's bass(Sadowsky #4224) but when I showed the pix of it to my wife, she said "that's kinda plain", so Kevin and I came up with this "non plain' version of his bass. Just trying to keep the little woman happy and all… ;)

Two of the four bassists were playing Sadowskys - one MV5 (I think), one Vintage 4 (that ironically was identical to mine - Dakota Red with a pearl white guard). The other two were a newish-looking Fender Jazz and what looked like a Stingray 5 - though this one was really hard to see from where I was sitting. All fine players, of course.

I get a kick out of seeing all of the professionals using these basses in many different genres of music, from metal to country swing. Just goes to show you how versatile Roger and Co's instruments are.

I have done all my gigs this year with my NYC RV4 Sadowsky - jazz trio, jazz quartet, rock and blues trio and function covers band.
My bass sounds great all the time in any situation.

IMHO, it's both (kinda' like P. Bass says). I'd actually call it a spalted burl because even though it is primarily a burl (as identified on the spec sheet), it definitely has spalting going on in it.

FWIW, anyway.

Just found this pic and i was a huge fan of the COSBY show in the 80's but never knew that he played bass, so here is Malcom- Jamal Warner and this looks like a SADOWSKY i could be wrong, if it is not a SADOWSKY i will remove the pic, but take a close look and see if it is.

I'm pretty sure he is listed an endorser on the sadowsky site

Which is odd, because he wasn't playing one at bass quake 2010. Maybe it predated his getting into them?

Hmmm...Had a chance to get on the Sadowsky site and look. He's not listed, but I am pretty sure he was, at one point. Of course, my memory is not what it used to be. ;)

I did a quick check of his website....Tons of pictures...Most of the basses looked to be Sadowsky. There were some Fenders, an upright, Rob Allen MB2, and an Xotic XB. But, the rest appeared to be Sadowsky.

Man I WISH I had that kind of free time, that I could just jump on a plane and make a buncha TB GTG's in various places. Of course then you'd all realize how much I suck and start ignoring my posts, but hey, sooner or later anyway, right? :D

That said, I still hope to come out East this year for a "tour de farce" and hit a few "shops". Maybe a club somewhere in NYC has our name on it one night? :)

Hey guys, I have a question. My bass came set up very well, I left it alone for a week and then decided I wanted to see if I could lower the action a little bit.

I was surprised because the neck was straighter than what I was used to, I was always under the impression you wanted no more than .015" relief, when I checked the Sadowsky it was at about .008"

I wanted to lower the action to about 2mm so I wondered if I could straighten the neck just a tad bit more (1/4 turn) and then proceed to lower the action.

So I did, and then I did... and it turned out incredible.

Right now, I'm measuring about .005" relief (measured at the 8th fret holding down the string on the 1st and 21st fret)

and I have the action at about 2mm (measured at the 17th fret)

I made these adjustments about 5 days ago and then re-measured today to see if anything relaxed/adjusted on it's own and everything is still the same. The bass came from New York to dry and warm Arizona.

All that to say, I'm really liking the feel of this setup and I'm wondering if there's any downside to having the neck as straight as I do? I thought I heard Roger state in an interview once that he always wants to start his setups with as straight a neck as possible and then move on from there.

This bass is just killin' in every category so far.

It is for sure a very well built gig bag. I've used my for years even before I got the Bass Safe. It does not at all have a cheap feel to it like others in that price range. The zippers are heavy duty.

Not sure who makes them for Carvin, but they are definitely worth the price!
