Hey guise-
Sad GAS is getting the better of me again, and I have a bass in mind-
5 string P/J, black with pearloid p/guard, maple neck, 24 frets.
What I'm curious as to, is what preamp to go with. I had a Metro M-24 a few years back and unfortunately wasn't really gigging at the time, but it had the I think more "modern" preamp, but still the VTC circuit and sounded really nice, albeit in my rehearsal room only... :o :(

Anyway, I guess the real issue is, can you get a P/J set on a "Modern" 5 string? I'm pretty sure I've seen 24 fret 5 strings on the "Standard" or "Vintage" models, but just curious as to how the voicings differ. We play modern hard rock and I'm maybe looking for a more supportive tone than flat out cutting.

Sadowsky only offers one preamp to my knowledge, unless you see the Will Lee as being the second.

As for the bass you describe, Sadowsky will gladly build a PJ on the 24 fret "chasis" with or without a PG.

I don't think there really is any "voicing" associated with the Standard verses Vintage. Those terms describe the configuration and layout of the bass. For example, I would not expect a Standard JJ with 60s positioned HCs to sound different than a Vintage with the same. (Any more than two basses are always going to sound a little different).

In my mind, the only difference is the vintage basses have a PG and front plate and the standards are clean on the front.

The voicing is going to come from the wood selection and the pickup selection and layout. With the NYCs, you can pretty much get anything you want.

As for the 24 fret basses, I do think the 24 hangs differently and has a bit different general feel on the strap than the 21s. It is a difference I prefer.

I checked out the Sad site and they definitely have available what I want. I read up more on the pre and it looks just to be a different layout configuration, depending on the bass. Most manuf's differ (or some, anyway) in the preamp itself depending on the configuration so that's what made me wonder.

I had the 24 Metro and yeah I definitely would wanna go with those. I know they offer the Vintage/Standard lines in 24-fret configs but I think this is the best option if I decide to move forward.

Nah this baby is mine only, 1st owner, just got it last month. I've seen rob's and it's quite nice too but he opted for a rosewood (or another darker wood) fingerboard. Hmmm, I just realized...I don't know who built my bass! Heading to the control cavity...

Just wanted to share that I'm still LOVING my RVPJ5. It is my number one bass now. I had an ash-maple NYC a while back that didn't do much for me, so I'm not sure if it's the alder morado or the PJ set up, but either way its awesome. I subconsciously wish it was a NYC, but I really don't think it would sound or play any better if it was...

Good for you & congrats.
I personally feel that a rosewood bd has a symbiotic (sorry :) ) relationship with the P pup. It's almost like how a tube amp sound also fits a P-Bass so well.
I have a Fender alder/maple P which sounds pretty good but not as creamy fat as the Sad' rosewood with any body wood.

I recorded all my bass tracks on our latest release "Chasing Shiny Object" with my Metro MV5. This bass just keeps getting better and I don't think about playing much else... Oh I get tempted from time to time and I would like to get a Sad P5, but it's just not in the cards right now.

Our CD Release party is on July 25. Can't wait! It's great to be able to share our music through iTunes. Borderless music distribution... It doesn't get any better.

Beautiful bass. I need a blue one very badly! Good luck with your new release.

As for the Metro/NYC thing: be happy you have the option. I play five string P-basses (I'm fussy that way) so NYC is my only choice.

This particular Metro fits me like a glove. 8.6 lbs w/ single coils and just doesn't get any better. I'll probably be in for a NYC when the time comes for P5 or PJ5 as I want a P body.

My nick name is Blue Lou, so the LPB was no brainer for me!
