Club Sadowsky!!!

Big outdoor job. M9; LDS 6x8 stack.
M9 flat, GEQ engaged, then lowest band pulled down two clicks.

To help me get a better handle on what the MV5PJ was doing that I didn't like from the previous show, I started with a more familiar baseline...
I played first set with the MV5JJ, which I know and like lots. Second set I moved to the Lakland ash/maple/Nor powered passive P, which I'm also very familiar with and use a lot.

Third set I moved to the MVPJ, dialed to P, passive.
Passive was very much like the Lakland, with as long as I dialed the tone back a little.
Engaging the preamp made it both brighter and fatter, though perhaps the fatter is "percieved fat" due to a small increase in gain structure?
At any rate, simply dialing back the shelving bass on the M9 to 10 o'clock worked, and lowering the P pup and raising the bridge pup seems, for now, to have given me a more controllable low end response, and better balanced blending.

Everyone in the band looked over to see *** when we played Play That Funky Music, because the slap tone is just soo noticably wicked.

It may be that once I'm back indoors, I'll be wrestling with things more. It's kinda hard to be too beefy outdoors.
I've got club gigs tues and fri before my 7 day approval period is up...

I liked it pretty well last night. Enough that I'm thinking in terms of
"$100 short term rental fee if I just send it back now, versus $5-600 long term rental fee" to take 6 months or better to mess with it long term.

I always take two basses to any gig, and lately that's been one J or the other, and the Lakland P. Sometimes both work well at a certain venue, but sometimes one works noticably better than the other. I could gig the rest of my days like that; but I could also see doing that with the MVPJ being the b-bass....

The story is different if it's the older non-Nordstrand P5, which I think is based on a Seymour Duncan model. The NP5 is more powerful and more grunty. The SD is a little sweeter and not quite as growly. Still not a huge difference, but that one's noticeable. It's one of the reasons I prefer the NP5. I do love the SD P5, but I like the NP5 a little better.

Vic, I know that this discussion is buried in one of the club threads....but isn't there a way to distinguish the pickups in the models from the last year or so by the pickup cover? My early 2010 PJ5's pickups seem to have sharper (for lack of a better word) edges and corners. Were these the Nordy's or the SD's? My P pickup seems to be real powerful and very growly.

The easiest way to tell is the pole pieces. Nordstrand NP's have diagonal aligned pole pieces.
