heheh I wasn't attacking your statement, but just in the way you worded it made it seem like what I did was somewhat unnecessary, when others have chimed in about their wanting of more mids...it's all cool, I guess I worded my response a little stronger than I meant as well :D

Is your JJ ash/maple or alder/rosewood?

Ah right, you do have a PJ. Well, the rest of the signal path can make a difference, of course -- my gig cab is a Berg NV610, which is all about the mids. But you do a lot of recording so that's not necessarily relevant. Another factor might be wood. F'r instance I had two ash-bodied P5's (one Lull, one Sadowsky) that didn't have the mid punch I wanted, whereas my three current Sadowskys have alder bodies and all make me deliriously happy. Doesn't prove that body wood is the deciding factor, but still, it's possible that my ears are tuned to alder. :p And a big wildcard is that we all have different technique, different taste.

I have to add that your midrange mod is exceedingly cool, and wonderfully executed. Glad it did the trick!

All three of my Sadowsky basses are ash/maple. Metro PJ5, which of course is solid ash, then an older NYC JJ5 that's also solid ash (no top), and my newest one which is the NYC JJ 24 fret that's a chambered ash body and a flamed maple top.

You're right man. I feel all tone first comes from your hands, then your bass. All the other stuff can be manipulated to sound however you want, but if you are just going DI or are in the studio with just preamps, you need the tone you want to be in the bass at hand. In this case, more mids and less hollow. Your bass looks amazing by the way. I went for Maple Burl.

I have a NYC alder/maple with the full size body (#4666). Loaded with sc's. I'd say it has a bit more in the low mids then my ash/maple Will Lee. It isn't a huge difference though. I find the bigger diffetence in the top end, where the ash/maple WL really has a little extra spank there.

I have not recorded with the WL yet though and maybe the difference would really show there.

If you want to hear the alder/maple, go to Link Removed. You can download the tracks for free. "Louisiana", "Long Way Home" and "My Sin" are all the alder/maple NYC into an Avalon U5, so it should give a good reference of how it sounds in a mix. On all of those tracks,I was in active mode with a little bass boost and the VTC about halfway back.
