The Sadowsky (NYC V.P4 w/PJ's) ash/rw bass settings & ME-1NV preamp setting was identical on all 3 overdubs. Bass Vol. full up, Pan @ P pup favoured, VTC full on, Bass Preamp on & flat.

A.= New Sadowsky SBF45's (105-45)
B.= New D'Addario Chromes ECB82 (105-50)
C.= Well broken in (10months) Chromes ECB82 (105-50)
My personal preference order: A,C,B.
I should mention that there is more involved here, to me, than just tone. It's the sonic EFFECT that the strings have on one's ears/perception. (Live, thru an amp, could alter this effect). For instance, in my recordings, the new chromes I find to be fatiguing over an extended period. They have a somewhat "invasive" or "overly penetrating" quality to them, which in turn changes to a "heavy", "full bodied" sound as they mellow w/ break in. This I like. But- the overall smooth tonal balance of the Sadowsky 45's is something special to me. Most high quality flats have more thud with that smoothness which makes them less versatile IMO.
Now you can go back to enjoying your round wound strings. :D

Edit: I'm pleasantly surprised at how well I'm adjusting to the bit lighter tension & gauge of the Sad 45's. Allows for lighter attack that makes the flats sound less compressed to me.

Blair, thank you so much for your efforts on this comparison. Very enlightening. I actually prefered the old Chromes here. The Sadowskys seemed like they were a bit louder than the other two which may have made a difference.

Thank you Jerry. I enjoyed it. I hear ya re the old chromes. I've been feeling the same for many years while playing my Fender P. I decide to stay with them awhile with the Sad' to give 'em a fair chance but NOW it's the SBF45's that'll be riding the rosewood. I know it's not a popular stance,(& that's just fine w/me), but flats are just as much my bass as the rest of "it".

Is that some type of spalted maple combo? Rad looking bass you have there. What do you think of the TC Electronics Polytune?

I've tried (more than once) to go back to the blue nickel rounds on my PJ and I can't, the Sadowsky flats just belong to these basses.

Thanks for your kind words. It is simply a 4A spalted maple top with 59' Burst finish. Just email to Kevin@ Sadowsky, they got plenty of amazing spalted maple top available!

PolyTune works well with all my basses from 4 string to 6 string.

Ok-you're forgiven Fran.
I happen to love the sound of round wound strings on a Sadowsky bass! How could you not. Roger just posted a link on Facebook of "Nickelback" bassist Mike Kroeger playing a PJ w/ rounds that make my ears glow.
Doen't mean I want to emulate his or everybody else's sound. You could put Mike's sound up against a handful of other Sadowsky PJ player's sound & I wouldn't be able to pick him out in a blind evaluation. But you stick my PJ in there, & guess what.(never mind-:))....anyway, I LIKE a personal sound signature. I even play a cover line that comes from inside me- not what the other guy felt. Flats have been a cultivation with me for a LONG time & at the risk of repeating myself - they're in my blood. OLD, mellowed blood :D
