I've been on a string kick lately, trying so many different brands/types on my PJ5. Went through the Sadowsky SS blues, to DR Sunbeam Nickels, then TI Jazz Rounds (Nickel), back to the SS blue labels, then Sadowsky Flats, to Fodera Victor Wooten Nickels (currently on the bass). Just got the new EB Cobalt Slinkys so before I try them out, thought I'd finally do the EQ comparison for those curious about the mod I did. Will add similar clips with any new strings I put on in the future (starting with these Cobalts).
Few notes:
All clips so far have the pickups set 50/50 Blend and volume at 100%. (I may do some more clips with the P or J pickup soloed)
Signal Chain: Sadowsky NYC Rev. PJ5 --> Aguilar DB900 Tube DI --> Black Lion Audio Modded Digi 002 Rack.
Recorded in Pro Tools 9 at 88.2k, 24 Bit. Bounced down to 44.1k mp3 (320k bitrate).
No EQ, compression or other effects used on bass. Mastering Limiter plugin used to bring mix up to level.
Oh yea, and forgive the sloppy playing, was trying to do this as quickly as possible
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Clip 1: Flat EQ
Just as a control for the comparison: Active On, VTC Fully open, all EQ controls Flat. Would have put it in passive but I wanted to use as little volume riding as possible.
Clip 2: Low and High EQ Boost
Best way I could describe this...If OFF (No Boost) is 12 o'clock:
Low Boost = 2:00, Hi = 5:00,
Mids set Flat, VTC Full On
My typical setting for most fingerstyle stuff, the Slap tone is cool but not my favourite setting, that's in clip 3...
Clip 3: Low and High EQ Boost with Mid Boost/Cut
If OFF is 12 o'clock:
Lo = 2:00, Hi = 5:00 (settings untouched from Clip 2)
FINGERSTYLE: Mids 50% BOOST, 45% Freq range
SLAP/OUTRO: Mids 25% CUT, 20% Freq range
VTC Full On
The sweepable midrange unit has two frequency ranges, set by dipswitches inside the control cavity: 100Hz to 1kHz (my current setting), or 200Hz to 2kHz). So my percentages are where the freq knob is, so I can't pinpoint the exact frequency I'm boosting or cutting (although If I ran it through a spectral analyzer I'd probably figure it out).
That little extra mid boost helps to cut through in certain situations, or gives a little extra snap when the strings have broken in. I think cutting the mids gets the bass pretty close to a J-Bass slap sound (mainly the pops)...what do you think?
