I had a week off, but yesterday the whole rehearsal, gigs, freelance work, ... started again. I took the WL5 yesterday for its first ride outside the house. I had a freelance job with a brass band. Quite big room, a lot of stone and glass, about 25 woodwinds, 25 brass instruments and a whole arsenal of percussion instruments. Needless to say: not the most comfortable place for acoustics.
I took my Markbass F500 and Bergantino AE410 to the job, as there was no place on stage for any other equipment. I tried the WL5 with the mid boost off first, and the sound was nice and full, like any other non-WL Sadowsky. When I put the mid boost on, it really helped to cut through a little more (which came in handy since I was sitting in between the drums and timpani's). At one moment, the conductor asked me to play a little louder, but instead of turning all kinds of EQ and volume knobs, I just hit the mid boost switch and everyone was happy.
I have done similar jobs in similar situations with my 'older' Sadowsky basses, and they also did the job very well. The difference is, with the non WL-basses, I sometimes had to fiddle around with the EQ of my amp, which can be a hassle if you have fixed EQ points.
I also found that the mid boost works best when both pickups have equal volume. Due to the nature of single coil pickups, if they're both at the same volume, there's a slight mid cancellation going on (around 500-1000 Hz I think). When you favor one pickup a little more, you get those 500-1000 Hz frequencies back.
I'm just saying this 'cause I found the mid switch a little much when engaged with a slight favor for one pickup.
Keep in mind that I set my mid boost that way, so that it works best with both pickups at the same volume. If you favor one pickup, you can always adjust the amount of mid boost via the trim post at the back of the control plate at the backside of the bass.
Long story short: the WL takes the 'one bass to do it all' one step further. Fit, finish and setup were perfect out of the box, as expected. In extreme situations (like described above), it holds its ground and punches its voice through if you want it to.
The mid boost works especially well when playing finger style (haven't tried pick yet, but for slap, I prefer the 'normal' Sadowsky pre).
FYI: The Markbass F500 was set EQ flat, with a minimum of gain and a little more master volume. The AE410's tweeter control was at 12 o'clock.
The WL5 was set with both pickups at the same volume, a slight bit under maximum volume. Tone was set at about 20% (that magical place where it begins to open up), since it has new strings, I kept it quite low.
The mid boost comes shipped at maximum, but I reduced this a little bit and set the overall volume of the pre at about the same level as when the mid boost disengaged. I fooled around with the internal mid switches this week, and after spending some time with each of them, I finally came back to what it came shipped with: #2.
The WL5 has a chambered ash body and an amazon rosewood fingerboard. Pictures are on page 8.

Well folks, I struck out in my attempt to get that Surf Green NYC. Just as I was about to pay the balance I had an unexpected hit on my budget and just couldn't swing it. The funny thing is right after I let it go someone else swooped in and and snagged it.
Oh well, all is not lost! I ended up getting one exactly like this as my consolation prize -

Well, if it's any consolation, it's not like the bass above is gonna' be anything less than amazing too. Seriously... if you aren't looking for custom finishes, fancy woods and lighter weights, the Metro line is PERFECTLY respectable. You get ALL the Sadowsky tone and playability.
