I remember when I got my letter from Hogwart's....

In other news, first gig last night with my new MV4 which arrived a couple days ago. I will now remove the plastic! Not that I really expected to even consider sending it back, but still. I love it. :D

Not sure if it's the maple FB, the single coils, or the fab setup but I think I'm liking it more than the old RV4. So. :cool:

Single coils would be my guess. The perfect pairing with the Sadowsky preamp.

I know there's a number of Sadowsky P players among us so I thought I'd do a little experiment so you had a sample of P pup soloed @ Mac 128 kbps mp3 & @ Mac 320 kbps mp3, converted from the original WAV 1411 kbps overdub file. The 320 is more frequency rich & sounds much more like the WAV recording, depending of course on your headphones, mp3 player, or computer playback.
(The "Broken Dreams" mp3 I posted a couple days ago was 128 kbps).

PS: I actually DID hop a freight train w/ a buddy in college in 1966. Rode the cab of the 3rd engine unit all along the north shore of Lake Superior at night under a full moon, ducking watchmen at the crew changes. VERY cool!

Could someone that has a UV70 4 string describe the neck profile? I have owned 3 Metro V4 basses, an older one with flat profile, 2 recent ones that have the more rounded neck. I am considering getting a UV70 but I have never played one.

Thank you J. If you find that tone appealing I wish you could hear the original WAV sample rate overdub. It's just another deal altogether. There's so much more of every part of the frequency spectrum & the sound stage image is so much more in terms of separation & depth. I remember reading something about the benefits of the old skule 2" tape recording in studios. It mentioned something about the bottom end foundation being so impressive on that size of stock.(don't understand that too well but it sounds a bit like similar reasoning to running a bass thru great big power tubes to achieve impact). The WAV overdub is along that line, relative to the mp3s. Mind you, the 320 kbps mp3 has more of a sound stage image than the 128mp3 & the LOW LEVEL detail is improved also.(not to be confused with low frequency detail).
The hosted file also picks up detail if downloaded. Even my YouTube WAV file uploads seem to suffer fidelity loss compared to my computer stash. (I've kind of given up on YouTube due to them blocking almost everything I load).
I'll tell you something else I've discovered. I have an Apogee Duet interface that I tried recording thru to Garage Band on my Mac & also for high end headphone playback of my overdubs recorded on my analogue processing system. NEITHER sounds as good as direct out of my Mac. The Duet is just TOO lush on the bottom to do justice to a Sadowsky bass tone character. I have yet to find anyone who agrees with me on that. Seems they prefer that coloration that the Apogee produces. It gives the illusion of "better" to some ears. Each to his own I guess.
I was hoping to hear from you guys who download for your mp3 players. Is the 320 an appreciable improvement considering the 2-1/2 times larger file size than the 128?
I posted this before but this is the analogue system I use for the bass before recording it digitally on the Olympus LS10.

What kind of DI is that, and why aren't you using the U5? I just got a U5 recently, and I'm amazed at how 3-dimensional the sound is out of that thing, and I never need to use the tone shaping, though if I used it on stage with a power amp or something, I might. So clear and detailed. Wow. Granted, it's my first high end DI (I've typically either used the one from a given head, or a Radial JDI in the past). Head DI's are fine for stage, and the JDI has thus far been pretty good for studio, but next time I record, I'm definitely using the U5, and honestly, I might even start using it live, too.

Anyway, you definitely got some nice rich tone coming out of the recordings, especially evident in the higher rez recording, so I just thought I'd ask. :)

I personally think the HD600 is preferable to the newer HD650. It has a more open, even sound w/ better transparency & the bass is more natural sounding. Yes that's a Cardas harness. When you get to aftermarket cables, the thing I find most impressive is the smoothness & lack of long term listening "fatigue" that can set in with some stock cable. The nuances are only relevant in conjunction w/ amplification that is very pure I think. I've heard good things about the new HD700. They would be more appropriate for low powered portable use (@ 150 ohms). I like the 300 ohm 600s because it takes more power to "drive" them & get the feeling of "gain".

There was a lot of talk among my friends here about that unit for bass guitar. It has a very special tonal character & has that "tube" & "gain" personality. I still think the Avalon U5 is the best sounding DI if you're after PURITY.(& it's FAST like high end power amps). It will probably have a special place in history. I won't be losing mine anytime soon! I did a bunch of overdubbing w/it when I ran my Fender P thru the Sadowsky o/b pre but I now like the way the ME-1NV handles the aggressive signal of the Sad' bass (I'm referring to the way the overdub is recorded) If I was going thru a 6 figure ($) board, I would have more options. :)

Thank you for that. I'm not so sure it sounds anything like my Fender P but that's really the point isn't it IMO.
RE CanCon, this is my fav of his. Pretty much sums it up. A timeless story. Not your run o' the mill R&R tune. :D

Interesting. I think I get what you're saying. And yeah, another one that's outa' my price range, but then again, I don't do that much recording, so that's ok. :)

As a time filler I'd like to have a bit of a say about these 2 comments.
1st of all, I was born w/a P-Bass & flats already strapped on. That ain't EVER gonna change. So yeah in that respect, the Vintage Sadowsky P4 w/PJs IS essentially a Leo's P. I was there listening to the start of R&R (more or less) & have followed it's growth for a long time. I'm 67 years old / closing on 68 REAL fast (29 from the neck up as G.L. would say ;)) & my days of gigging are all but toast so my overdub hobby is more than a little bit meaningful to me. It's a satisfaction - BUT it's intended to be a PERSONAL satisfaction only. Sighting my preference for flats it must be hard to imagine how passionate I feel about tone but THAT is a huge aspect of the hobby that justifies a Sadowsky bass & pricey preamps. NOTHING on my overdub recordings will ever capture the emotion I feel when playing my bass. If you can understand that I want to give y'all a little free advice here while you're still gigging. Someday all you Sadowsky players will be sitting where I am right now wondering where your years went. It's not an option. I don't have a $hit load of gig photos & gig recordings (or otherwise) from my younger days because, not only was there no cell phone captures & digital cameras & recorders then, it just never registered that someday I'd love to have some memories to look at & listen to. DO IT ! :bassist:
