Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Of course I've played it (actually a lot already
) at home along with some MP3 files, but that's not the same thing.This is actually my first real exposure to a Sadowsky J5. Up until now, they've been mostly 4's, believe it or not, and just short periods of time on 5's.
A really cool test tho, was A/B'ing with my 24F. Boy was that an eye-opener... because it's the exact same preamp (I'm pretty sure), just the different woods, pickups, and placement. Wow, what a major difference. The really cool part tho, is I think I was able to pick out the "Sadowsky mix cutting punch" in what was "common" between them. Definitely a midrange characteristic.
The J is notably "bigger" sounding... has more going on in the lows and low mids, and not as sizzly up top (part of which is that Ebony, as well). Like Ken says, the high end is a little lower in the treble region. Tends to bring out the "roundwound ring" a bit more, which is kinda' cool. I also believe part of that is those SC pickups. A bit more "earth" to the sound if that makes sense. I can't wait to hear it in a real band mix. I have high hopes.
Also, while Sadowsky basses, especially the ones with the newer necks (which this one is), the usual dead spots vary, but are typically not bad. This one seems particularly good in that area. The fundamental is nice and strong at the high C (1st string, 5th fret).
I currently have it strung with the new Blue SS's, but when those wear out, I'm going to try some DR's as well. The Blues seem really nice, but I think the DR's will bring the high end out a bit sweeter.
