does anyone know what the standard fret size for these basses? Jumbo? Medium?

Our standard wire is .094" wide x .051 high. 18% Nickel/silver 200Hv hardness.

I still don't understand something about
the VTC. Is all the way clockwise considered "off" or flat? Is it adding more highs by turning it clockwise? Or
is counter-clockwise adding more bass?
In other words, which position is flat
and adding no tone?

Passive controls cannot add, they can only subtract. The VTC rolls off a wide swath of high frequencies. Flat is full up (10).

The VTC is what you have to give up on a 3 hole configuration.

I will look into a stacked vol-vol pot that might permit us to include the VTC. The issue is that I would have to order either 1000 pots or 1000 knobs to match my other knobs.

Hmmm... would it be possible to make the active treble boost control the take-away? I pretty much never boost treble, but I do boost bass and I do cut VTC on a pretty regular basis depending on things.

+ 1, I actually think it's a bit of a necessity. Not having the VTC on that hot preamp would be a deal breaker for me. I use it at least a bit pretty much all the time.

I use this way quite a bit too. However sometimes I roll off the VTC almost completely and boost the treble. Gives the high end a little different kick.

Put another way, I can't imagine having a bass that is modeled after a classic P or J without the standard passive tone control. Roger's pre is just wonderful to me. Sounds great 'flat' (i.e., passive tone wide open, bass boost and treble flat). Dial in a touch of low end to fatten, and adjust the top end to your taste by cutting the VTC slightly to eliminate the amount of sizzle you want and/or do the 'boost treble/cut VTC' like you do. The push/pull bypass takes the entire 'battery' thing out of the equation, so no worries about the battery failing, or a preamp issue taking you down on the gig.

Very nicely voiced preamp. I can't imagine screwing with the design (even adding a mid boost on some models).

I never liked the sound of active cut controls....that's why I never use them. Also, you cannot cut with my FET circuit, only boost. Hence, the VTC.

Yeah... IMHO, I'd much rather have a VTC on top of the active bass boost. I'd think that'd even be the same exact stacked pot part, so no new parts, either.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I know all this.

What I meant was, instead of sacrificing the VTC, sacrifice the treble boost control. In other words, VTC/Bass, then vol-blend or vol-vol. I'd think that VTC/Bass would even be the same stacked pot part.
