Club Sadowsky!!!

I got a new amp sense we met though are you guys coming to Bend again ?

Hey Craig, that amp looks sweet. The closest the band is getting is Portland on 11/1 but I'm not doing the tour this fall.

P.S. first dibs if you ever sell your P?

Here is one for all you Sadowsky owners. Hope it's okay to post this here. . .

I have a 5-24 but have never played a J5 (21 frets) and I'm interested in one.

Questions for those who are familiar with both models:

1. The 5-24 has a heel that is 3" wide (right?), and I'm assuming the heel of a J5 is the same. Now, doesn't this make the neck of the J5 wider in general? (Nut is the same, at 1-7/8"). Or is the 21-fret neck just a tad narrower at the heel so the dimensions of both necks are identical minus the 3 last frets?

2. Is the neck profile on both models the same? The J5 is a 2009 - my 5-24 is a 1999. I've played two other 5-24s, and I've found the profile to be identical, but I wonder if the profile of the 21-fret neck is different, for example, thicker front to back.

3. Ergonomically speaking, any other considerations between the two models

Thanks

I've asked this question, and even Roger has told me they are pretty much identical. I own a 5-24 (best neck ever) a NYC Modern, and just let go a beautiful MV5. The 5-24 and the Modern while not identical, are so similar, there is literally no difference going from one to the other. The MV5 was indeed different. Not a drastic difference, but the neck felt wider in my hands, and not nearly as comfortable. It was not front to back that felt wider, in fact it seemed flatter, but across the face board. Going between the two wasn't bad, but the instruments do feel different. It was kind of a win, win for me. Not only do I love the Sadowsky soapbar sound, but the neck profile fits my hands better than any other five string I have owned! With that said, having both in your stable can only be a good thing. Some things, the JJ does just a bit better, but the sound/tone I have going on with my bass/amp combo is to die for.

Great reply, Jerry. Thanks for that insight. Exactly what I wanted to hear. . . :)

Never owned a Sadowsky, though I've used the preamp/DI with other J basses many times...always sounds great. Lately I started thinking it would be so much easier to just have the preamp on the bass so I wouldn't need to carry the preamp/DI around. so I started thinking about dropping it into one of my existing basses. Then I though, heck I should just get a Sadowsky and quit fooling with all this other crap.

:help: Am I in trouble now?

Not with anyone here. ;)

I went the preamp-only approach for about a year before caving and buying my first NYC in 2001. I still love and own Fenders, but not as much as my Sadowskys. The hardest adjustment for me was the body shape (@7/8ths the size of a Fender J) of the standard Sadowsky Jazz basses. Bought a Sadowsky Ultra Vintage and that solved that.

Well, I've been chasing dinky J style bodies for a while. I don't like the full size J's. The Lakland DJ body is my favorite. I've got two of them right now, both loaded with Area J pickups, though I have a pair of Ultra Jazz pups I put in one of them occasionally. Both pickups/basses sound killer with the Sadowsky preamp. Since these basses don't have a side mounted jack though, I can't put the Sad preamp in them without some significant work. I'm not even sure if one would fit anyway given the curved jack plate and lack of a battery compartment. So that's really what got me started thinking about a Sadowsky. Tonally, there is nothing I feel like I'm missing out on at the moment...except the convenience. Having a Sadowsky would allow me to just plug directly into a Radial JDI and forget about everything else.
