Very cool bass, indeed.

I've been thinking about shimming the neck on my Metro WL5. The G-string saddle is down on the deck, the relief is about .012" at the seventh fret, and just a touch lower action would be nice for slappin' and poppin' with Blue Label strings... Good fretwork is a wonderful thing!

I took it to the shop a few months after I got it for something unrelated, and they noticed I had my saddles on the bridge all the way down.
They suggested I get a shim, took about 10 min.

And you are right... since the fretwork is so good, it plays REALLY even now across the neck.

The Metro WL5 is sweet, hope you are enjoying it.

Tell me why. (Not arguing, just asking.) I've done it several times before on other basses. Just took the neck off, put the shim in place, snugged the neck bolts, then did the usual truss rod and bridge adjustments.

Oh--wait a minute. Do ya mean check the neck relief before deciding I need to shim? Got that!

So that's got the P in it's traditional location and the J in 60's location? It's hard to have the right frame of reference.

Yep, the J is in the 60's location.

My favorite sound from the bass is the soloed P with the VTC on (I'll engage it more or less, depending on the amp/PA I'm playing through).
This, combined with the woods (Rosewood/Alder) gives a nice, mellow but even/modern P sound... It sits so well with other instruments!

Yeah its just a common mistake to keep lowering saddles to get lower action when you really just have excessive relief in the neck.

I'm a huge Sadowsky fan but having a new Kinal built, a PJ5. I really have had great luck with Nordstrands in the past and was going to use their pups. I'm using a John East preamp. I think the NP5V may be less boomy and work better with a preamp like that. I gotta decide between the NP5 and NP5V, and also the NJ5S or NJ5SE. I had the NJ4SE in another bass and it was great. I didn't like the neck NJ4SV that much.

With all the negative feedback on the Sadowsky NP5/NJ5S pickups I'm kind of considering a NP5V/NJ5SE set. Feedback is always appreciated.

BTW my Kinal will be alder/maple, 24 frets, and probably standard P (not reverse).

I have a set of NORD NJ4 in my late 80s Sadowsky JJ4 alder /RW it had EMGs in it and i recently put the Nords in it... They sound INCREDIBLE!!! Love them...
Jimmy at Alleva is making me a P5 set to A/B with my Duncan set in my nyc PJ5.. i should have them in a week of two to demo..

You like the J but hate the P from
Nordstrand in your Sadowsky. I know Roger uses the NP5. I think you should try the NP5V and tell us what you think.

I never said that i hated the NP5.. Its not my cup of tea at this time.. Big difference!
. Im going to get the Alleva P5 which i know that i will like alot in my nyc..Jimmy just remagnetized my Duncan and its perfect now.. The "E" poles were weaker than the others... I have a half dozen long shells from Alleva for my kbp5 basses , but they wont fit... . The new Alleva will sound more like the duncan short shell P5 than the Nord... they have have a good mid growl that the nords dont have..
Different strokes for different folks..
I LOVE the mid sound of the Nord J pups...They are more aggressive than the duncans that i have played.. Just never can get used to the P or SB types.. Just my thing.

I will probably always play a NYC Sadowsky. I have a J5 with SCs and love it. I am playing in a modern country band and need more low/middle mids and for country the click drives me crazy. It is an ash/maple reverse PJ5 it just needs a slight adjustment and it will be perfect. Any country players please chime in.

I play classic country/rock, new pop country (and many other styles) and I've been using a custom (my own built) ash with composite neck 5 strings, a Roscoe heavily modified 5 and a Sadowsky M24-5 with OEM SB pups (early on with Sadowsky pre than with Nordstrand 3b pre)…… I think it is more in one own hands (and maybe few tweaks here and there, I admit it!)…
My point, with three totally different instrument it is still work… maybe you need an alder/rosewood base to start with (?)… food for thoughts :-)

I have two Metros and they've turned me into a total fanboy. A hybrid rosewood p/j and a maple Will Lee, both four stringers. I have Sadowsky Black Label flats on the p/j and Chromes on the Will Lee, both tuned one semitone down from concert pitch.

I just took the Will Lee all the way from home (Australia) to the uk for a month of dates and it never missed a beat.

I am a Duncan fan, call them and explain what your looking for....they will make it, or have the PUP your looking for. SD is a Cincy boy, great guy. Hope all is well.MG
