Yeah, but the Sadowsky preamp still colours the sound a bit even when it's in passive mode - or at least it does on my Lull. A LOT of that Sadowsky sound is in the preamp.

totally agree... and i would also say duncans first... even tho carey makes great pickups, I just find the duncans to be a little sweeter sounding.

I'm finding a such 6 strings as well, my current Fodera build finished few months ago with Ash/rosewood combo, put a set of Aguilar DCB on it, sounds good but don't expect that's more sound like a Sadowsky.

Thinking on ordering a F to try but dun't have any funds around to do so, also, I always have the cut-thru problem with their BN5 plus I always came thru some with a weaker output B string.

Im so wishing Roger can seriously consider building some 6.. At least my order is guaranteed :p

I like F's; but agree they are not quite as assertive.

Only other suggestion I could add would be to track down one of the Fender Steve Bailey basses and drop the Sadowsky preamp in that.

But, I also agree that if the instrument doesn't come out of one of Roger's shops, it won't quite get it.

Edit: the other thing would be to get one of the Sadowsky 5's, string it E to C and install the HipShot on the E string. That would get you really close to what a 6 can do.

My Fave P5 pickup these days is the Duncan... Hands down the punchiest.. I Love NORD J bass pups. .But the P is scooped sounding to me... The Duncan is warm and phat with good low mid punch... The Nord has a more open top end which many like. i did too years ago. But im back to the Duncan as something that records and gigs more to my liking...

I need some help deciding my build. I can't afford one yet but it's going to be one of my next few basses that I buy. I am heavily influenced by Hugh McDonald and his sound. I have decided on a vintage jazz style body with a p/j pickup configuration. Maple neck, 22 frets, chrome hardware. I can decide on what body wood to go for. I deffinatly want either a chambered alder or chambered ash. On top of that Im going for a quilted maple top finished in cherry burst or caramel burst. Also tort pick guard. What do you guys think I should go for?

I believe you're saying maple board? If so, I always love ash body go with that.

Of recent years hugh has been playing chambered alder body with Brazilian RW FB and in P style not PJ.. And its usually the Duncan P5 pup not the nord.

For me?
Mostly.
Depends what you want.

Nord and G&L and reverend (not anymore though) did great "hot P" stuff.

If you want "real Fender" Motown stuff, it's hard to beat old fenders or the AVRI stuff.

I know what you mean, Chef.
I'm a big fan of the Motown/Stax P-bass sound.
But I also like having a P-bass pickup that can cop the Motown sound, but have some extended range in the mids and treble for more modern stuff, when the song/mix calls for that.
I've found two pickups that I like for that. Aguilar makes one (their Hot-P) and EMG the other (Geezer). If that's too OT, we can stop here.

Not to derail the P discussion and Not trying to be a heretic; but...have any of you tried the Delano single pole J pups in a Sadowsky? Reason for asking is I put one of Roger's preamps in a 97 Fender J Deluxe to make a "cheater" Fender. As it turns out, I am getting pretty stellar results with the combination of the Suhr designed single slug pups and the Sadowsky preamp. I was thinking to try the single slug pups in my RV4; but, the Fender pups have become scarce as hen's teeth. The Delano's appear to be similar construction. Anyone tried those?
