...Aaand I'm quoting myself again to show how I solved the issue.
After having the neck diagnosed, under Sadowsky's CS suggestion, by a very well regarded local luthier, who basically told that the thing was structurally perfect and just had a tiny dead spot, I just accepted the fact that this was a case of "acute bad luck", so to say.

Having verified the impact that adding mass to the headstock has on the sustain of certain notes, I just bought a Fat Finger that, once correctly placed, has made the dead spot virtually nonexistent. Not that aesthetically displeasing either.
I'm a bit anxious to see if the thing will stay put after some extensive out-of-home use, with the bass being carried in a gigbag. Also, we'll see if it will react in some nasty way with the nitro finish of the headstock.
All in all it could have been worse though, I'm loving this bass, it's just solid. It works. And it's so versatile. Its capability of slotting itself in almost any mix reminds me of P basses in a strange way, although the two have very little in common. Those flats may have something to do with it, as well

I want a number! Here's a pic I found dating back to Oct 2000. My first Sadowsky bass. And here's a pic of the same bass today with a new pickguard, single coils, vtc, and drop d-tuner. We've been through a lot together, but still kicking!

So what are your thoughts on the new bridge pup?

I liked the pickup a lot. It's humcancelling in all positions, so it was nice and quiet. I was just able to play it for a few minutes at the end of the day, but it sounded like a nice jazz pickup when either the front or back coil was selected. I think my favorite was the middle position with both sides selected—very full and punchy sound. The shop worked with Nordstand to create this pickup.

Also, the Single Cut has our mids preamp. You'll see two switches on the control plate below. One is the coil selector switch for the rear pickup. The other engages the mids part of the preamp. If you've never seen our mids preamp before, it's a set it and forget it kind of system. You adjust the mids on the back of the control plate via a screwdriver (see the holes on the back of the plate) and then engage the mids with the switch when you need it. The bass/treble part of the pre is always active (if you have the bass in active mode), but you can turn the mids control off and on at will.

There is some discussion about that but nothing is firm. I'm not in the shop today, but I'll find out more about that tomorrow.

Quick question- My only real experience with Sadowsky stuff is my RV5 with the single coils. They seem almost too "raw" sounding to me at some times. It seems like I have more finger/fret noise than say my NJ5's. The VTC helps a lot, but I lose a lot of clarity getting the thud I like. I have never had more than a couple minutes at BSD with the hum-cancelling pickups- would they be "less raw" sounding than the single coils? Thanks!

my opinion only, is yes, less raw, more refined, compressed, whatever you want to call it. less IN YO FACE

which is why many folks prefer the single coils...but vive la diference

I've owned a couple of Sadowskys before, always ash/maple combo. But I'm really more of a rosewood/alder guy and it's been on my list to try a Sad in that configuration someday. So I was looking at the website (which I do regularly) and noticed this beauty - just about perfect specs-wise and I love the color. When I checked the price my jaw hit the floor . Evidently I missed the memo re the Satins. Just seems too good to be true, had to give this satin doll a tumble. I'll post a report once I've spent some time with it.
