I can double check tomorrow, but I believe that it is 3/32 from the top of the pickup to the bottom of the string on the G side and 4/32 on the E side.

Quick question- My only real experience with Sadowsky stuff is my RV5 with the single coils. They seem almost too "raw" sounding to me at some times. It seems like I have more finger/fret noise than say my NJ5's. The VTC helps a lot, but I lose a lot of clarity getting the thud I like. I have never had more than a couple minutes at BSD with the hum-cancelling pickups- would they be "less raw" sounding than the single coils? Thanks!

Is your RV5 an NYC? The reason I'm asking is that AFAIK the Metros come with HCs instead of singles, except for the Will Lee.

Nope its a Metro. It's been through a few hands from what I can tell. It was upgraded with the Sadowsky single coils by a previous owner.

I know for sure because this groovy cat has some mean licks on basses equipped with single coils. (apologies for the Lakland pic! )

So you're wondering whether to change the pups back to the stock HCs. Yeah, I'd agree they're a little less forward than the singles, a bit darker.

Try VTC at about 60-70%, bass +15%, treble +25% and (this is important) volume pulled back 10% to load the pickups and make the output sane so you don't slam your comp/pre too hard.


The old HCs were smooth, shiny, and scooped. The new ones are like drier, very clear singles that need a little bass boost. Which is handy because the sadowsky has a great sounding bass boost. The old singles are solid, classic, high mid focussed duncans. The new singles are high mid snarl monster nordstrands.

If you leave a Sadowsky bass in passive mode but plugged in, does the battery still drain?

Is it necessarily the same answer for all active basses with a passive option?

I liked the pickup a lot. It's humcancelling in all positions, so it was nice and quiet. I was just able to play it for a few minutes at the end of the day, but it sounded like a nice jazz pickup when either the front or back coil was selected. I think my favorite was the middle position with both sides selected—very full and punchy sound. The shop worked with Nordstand to create this pickup.

Also, the Single Cut has our mids preamp. You'll see two switches on the control plate below. One is the coil selector switch for the rear pickup. The other engages the mids part of the preamp. If you've never seen our mids preamp before, it's a set it and forget it kind of system. You adjust the mids on the back of the control plate via a screwdriver (see the holes on the back of the plate) and then engage the mids with the switch when you need it. The bass/treble part of the pre is always active (if you have the bass in active mode), but you can turn the mids control off and on at will.

Here's that single cut in action with the new pickup on the bridge--sorry, my hand is covering it here. This is me playing a Vintage version of the Single Cut yesterday in the show room. We also shot a video where Roger talks about it that we're trying to get up for early next week.

Great looking bass. Really like the layout and concept behind it. I'll bet it's a tone monster. Is the neck solid and stable with only 3 retaining screws?
