Club Sadowsky!!!

Joker if you wouldn't mind post some pics of your ebony/ash Sads, love to see them. I'm intrigued by your post.
I've always loved dark rosewood on my four stings but prefer maple on five strings, seems more clear. Ebony may be a nice middle.
Thanks

ta-dah!

i asked for the darkest ebony possible, and roger & the pips did not disappoint.

While not Vic's, here are some other clips to ponder...
I think to the largest extent, all the Modern/24F's have a large common ground, so any good sound clips of one will tell you the story. Diff wood combos and such will color it differently, but the majority of that tone is still there. IMHO.

So in short, while he toasts me in playing ability, at least that bass sounds a lot like mine. :)

Hi Ted,
I don't mean to confuse you any further, but you may want to consider a mahogany body with the ebony board. Here's mine...

Not exactly your "classic J" but a wonderful combo worth considering. The mahogany body adds a nice low-mid push (read: "warmth/organic" emphasis) to the overall tone. However, it still sounds "like a Sadowsky" in the mix. Mine has HC's.

Cheers,
Kevin
Hi Kevin:

Beautiful bass! I've had Mahogany basses and really dug their warm tone. I'll probably opt for Ash at this point with the hope of achieving a more true Jazz Bass tone.

its possible, just might not be as comfortable. but try PM'ing bikeplate. i'm pretty sure he has tried a 24 fretted j-style.

and have you tried PM'ing craig hisself? he did both the HC and SC's in that bass, and he seemed to like the SC's more.
Thanks for the ideas. I've PM'ed Craig to discuss his bass and pickup choices. He's very stoked on the HC pups and did a good job, along with several other TB'ers convincing me that is the way to go. I'll pm bikeplate to gather more impressions of the pros and cons of the 24 fret board with JJ positioned pickups.

oh ok,

thought he swapped out the HC's for the SC's in the video. but nice!

 I think he used SC's in his video. Again, the HC's sound fine (especially in the RW/Alder basses), but the SC's sound SO much better to me in the ash/maple models. Just IMO there.

How is the ash/ebony combo? I am leaning towards that but fear that it may be too bright...

What are your thoughts?

I find the Ebony WAY too over the top for me on the Modern24. With a light ash body and Ebony board, the Modern brings to mind Mark King's early Alembic tone. That very aggressive mid punch combined with the fast ebony 'ping' really takes those basses to uber uber modern land. I greatly prefer both the look and tone of maple on the moderns(pure IMO there). Something about the fancy top woods of the NYC Moderns and a dark board, and then that 'unfinished Fender' type headstock just doesn't work visually for me either.

The Ebony boards on the more traditional J style basses are cool, but they definitely move those instruments even farther away from a traditional J tone (and look)... again that 'ping' to the response. That's not a bad thing at all, but it's a bit of a disconnect to me with a J style instrument.

I'm totally digging the look of Joker's black bass though, and with the Ebony board and those 'Big' Nordy pickups, that's a great way to get the 'feel' of a Sadowsky J and a more modern type tone. That's a beauty!

Thanks for your input, Ken. From what I've read and heard, the SC can sound very nice on Ash/Maple and Ash/Ebony Sadowsky basses, and I think I'm leaning that way now. To your point, I think I may be over analyzing the pickup placement issue, and should consider that the SC pickups in the standard 60's position would add that bit of bite and focus present on the Metro UV70 I played at BassNW.

Vic and several others have described the SC as pretty quiet for this type of pickup. Has this been your experience as well?

Yes... of course you will get some hum if you solo either of the pickups like on any single coil (which can be major or minor depending on the room/context you are in), but the shielding is amazing. Quite frankly, with both pickups dimed, but singles are actually quieter than my HC's!

I am not a member of this club, but I'm hoping that, with your help, I can be. :D

Years ago I got a John Patitucci video and fell in love with the tone of his Sadowsky.

Someone has posted parts of this video on Youtube.

This is a sample of its slap tone.

This is a sample of its fingerstyle tone.

I've just sold a couple of basses and would very much like to get a 5 string Sadowsky that sounds like this... but I need help.

Does anyone know anything about John Patitucci's Sadowsky?

Is it a rosewood fingerboard? Does it have an alder body? Was this before Roger's pickups? Does it have EMGs or Bartolinis?

More importantly, can anyone help me configure a bass that would sound like this?

Would [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] hit the target?

Thanks, guys.

Hi Tom.

I also love the way John's bass sounds. The slap sound is absolutely slammin! Best I have ever heard. Making me gas for a Sad so bad.

That particular bass had EMG pickups, instead of Sadowskys. Im not sure what sound difference this would make, but I imagine they would bring some sort of 'electronic' bite to the table.

That tone is probably not easily attainable however :crying: since none of us are John Patitucci. Its all in the hands you know (Or so they say). Also, we dont know what the signal path was after the bass in that video. So, it was probably a one of a kind tone.

+1, i love the sound of patitucci playing that bass, killer...

That bass to me sounds quite similar to that model with the current standard Sadowsky HC's... with that quite clean, almost hi fi top end. It's a nice tone, although not my particular favorite.

For an example of a similar Sadowsky with single coils (they happen to be the Nordstrand singles, but it sounds very similar to my MV with Sadowsky singles), check out the 'NYC In-Stock page. There's a very good sound sample on there (scroll down through the instruments a bit and you will see the link), and you can hear the somewhat more aggressive, somewhat more grindy SC tone.

I was watching the Annual NHK Red & White New Years Special with my wife (this is the big year end varity program from Japan. My wife is Japanese BTW) All the hot Pop and Traditional artists were there and it was over 4 hours long. A really good show if you are into the Japanese music scene.

Anyways, one of the artists comes out for thier turn playing when I notice the bass is was tearing thru the mix. Of course they never showed the bass player yet. :rollno: But, his tone was very pronounced. Sure enough, they show the bass player and he is playing a Sadowsky Modern 24/5. One of the older ones with the bypass switch. It had a maple neck as well.

His playing was fantastic and the tone was amazing. It was so much more in the mix than the other bands. I said to my wife "Yup, thats the Sadowsky tone there!" she gave me a look like what ever. :eyebrow: But, I was enjoying it.

It got me thinking about this instrument. I love the JJ tone that I get from my 4 and 5 banger but, man the sound of that 24/5 was immpressive. :bassist:

Hey Joey,

You know, if I had spec'd my Modern to be a little heavier and with a maple board, I might still own it (edit: OK, probably not!). It is a VERY punchy tone that works great in some contexts. Even the heavier ash/maple is not really my thing totally with that model, but it is impressive if you are looking for 'soapbar burp'!

Thanks Joker.... WOW!
So do you prefer the Big Singles vs. the 59' bass?

np!

actually, those are fat stacks, and are literally like a bigger, even smoother version of the HC's. but in the 70's position, and because i'm a back pickup fingerstyle guy, i still get a really nice even growl. i'm thiiiiiiiiiiis close to getting a set of big singles tho, just cause i'm that curious.

i'm actually thinking about swapping out the '59 burst's HC's for a set of roger's SC's. wanna shake things up a little.

What are your thoughts?

i mentioned this many times before, but yea, its my favorite wood combo. heck, i've got two basses in it!!!

the ash is punchy with a nice fundamental, and compared to the alder bodied sadowskys i've had, it feels more responsive and quick. the ebony like Vic mentioned has a nice "ping" ontop for slap. nicer to my ear than the "clack" of maple, which isnt a bad thing, just different.

FYI, my inspiration of this wood combo was from a demo bass in the shop that was used to show off the fretboard lights feature roger was offering at the time, and i just could NOT get over how awesome that bass sounded and felt. my 59 burst is literally exactly like that bass, exception of the lights.

nice,

FYI, a friend of mine who subs from time to time in terence blanchard's group uses an ash/maple modern 5, and one piece is literally just a droning low B, where time and again, the sadowsky modern proves its one of the best 34" scale low B's ever. ;)
