Club Sadowsky!!!

Well today starts the first day of my NYC Sadowsky Fund. I'm gonna be saving up to special order my first NYC model in May.

I figure that will give me 5 months to figure out what I really want. It'll either be a JJ or PJ on a full size Jazz body. I'm still thinking about wood combos, finish and all that.

It's gonna be a long time coming, but luckily my Metro will continue to serve me well until then.

Thanks for your input on this, Rob. I was hoping you'd reply as I could tell from reading through the thread that you have a great deal of experience with Sadowsky's of all types. That said, would you say there is at least adequate room for slapping on a 24 fret fingerboard with JJ pickups? If I had an inch and a half of room for slapping I would probably be okay.

Thanks for the input on the pickup placement question-the info really helps! I'm definitely concerned with placement choice, considering that I can change pickups between SC and HC at any time, but will have to live with the placement once the bass is built.

Hey Ted

I'll be playing on the North End (Auruora N. in Shoreline) at Grinders on Sat 1/3 and will have both NYC's (vintage 5 and 24F5 w/ Soapbars). You are more than welcome to come check 'em out if you like. ...or PM me and we'll set something up where you can come up (Edmonds) and try them out.

Well, you don't pay extra for those last few frets, so I guess just consider them cosmetic. ;) :)

Seriously tho, it's all part of the total package, which is a carefully formulated thing. If you really dig the sound of the "Modern/24F", . :)

Wish I could hear the sound of that Modern /24F5!

Per Vic's comment, it's a pretty 'risk free' decision, since they are identical size and easy to swap out. I guess I would say that I find the extra mid presence and slightly lower treble frequency range of the Sadowksy single coil pickups REALLY sound good in the ash/maple models. I've A/B'd so many MV5's (60's position) and Metro UV 5's (70's position) that I've come to the conclusion that the slight difference in 70's pickup position is minor and subtle... I wouldn't get hung up on that.

Interestingly, I disliked the HC's enough in the ash/maple models that I decided to swap out the HC's in my RV with SC's (Sadowsky). I always really liked the way my RV sounded with the stock HC's, but thought 'well, if the SC's made the MV sound so good, maybe it will make the RV sound even better'. WRONG! I'm putting the HC's back in. That softening of the upper treble, the bump in the mids and the slightly tightening of the low end that the SC's give you versus the HC's (which are a touch scooped, deep and sizzly up top) really 'improve' the MV ash/maple models to my ear. However, the RV's (IMO) actually benefit from the wider, more pure tone of HC's. The singles made my RV growl a touch more in the low mids, but it really darkened the tone of that bass and resulted in a low end that is too thin for my taste (my RV is very lightweight and routed, my MV is non-routed and heavier).

So, IMO it's not just as simple as 'put SC's in and be happy'. All this stuff interacts with each other.

That being said, I could die a happy man playing a Metro UV70 with single coils:D

Just FYI and IMO and IME!
Thanks for your input, Ken. From what I've read and heard, the SC can sound very nice on Ash/Maple and Ash/Ebony Sadowsky basses, and I think I'm leaning that way now. To your point, I think I may be over analyzing the pickup placement issue, and should consider that the SC pickups in the standard 60's position would add that bit of bite and focus present on the Metro UV70 I played at BassNW.

Vic and several others have described the SC as pretty quiet for this type of pickup. Has this been your experience as well?

hey ted,

first off, i'm guessing you're looking at the "modern" body shape, cause a standard w/ a 24 fret neck would probably make for an unreal scale length! but if its the modern shape w/ jazz pickups, then slapping might be problematic. my fore and index finger find it kinda hard getting in btwn the fretboard and front neck pickup.

as for woods, on any other instrument, I CANT STAND ebony. but on a sadowsky, with the voicing of the sadowsky pickups and preamp, its perfect. i used to be a maple guy, but oddly, compared to the ebony, maple almost seems clacky now. and FYI, ebony/ash is my FAV sadowsky wood combo. you get that articulate, yet smooth feel of the ebony with the woody punch of the ash body. i've had two sadowsky's with this combo, including my current V-5.

as for pickups, your indecision isnt a surprising one, cause they all sound great! but FYI, the sadowsky single coils are pretty much "un-aged" seymour duncan antiquity ii pickups, so that might be helpful in sussing out the single coil sound for your needs.

BUT, i think the real important question boils down to if you want the modern or regular standard body shape. that question alone will affect your pickup choice, cause on a modern, i really like the big singles and fat stacks, which are in positions much different than any jazz bass setup.
You're right! I realized after my original post that any Sadowsky with a 24F fingerboard would require a Modern body. I have always liked ebony boards on many different types of basses, so it was not surprising to me when I really dug the sound of Craig Garfinkle's bass (NYC Standard 5 Ash/Ebony SC pups) on his YouTube Sadowsky demo videos.

Kevin at Sadowsky said that they could build a Modern with a JJ pickup configuration in either a 70's or 60's position as an option at no addition cost. I'm leaning toward this config because I'm looking for a more traditional jazz bass setup, albeit with potentially a 24 fret fingerboard (I'm not fully decided on that yet either!). My main concern now is trying to determine just how tough slapping might be on this type of setup, which will limit me to about 1 and half inches between the neck pickup and fingerboard.

Hi TR:

That sounds great. I'll come by Grinders on Saturday evening. What time does your set start?

For me, the pickup location only effects double thumpin, everything else is fine......
Hi Taylor:

Just listened to your MySpace site. Great playing. Is that your Modern 5 from your pictures on the G Soul tunes? The tone and playing on "When You Think of Me" is killer! If it's your Sadowsky, I'm sure lot's of folks on this thread would really dig listening to it!

I am not a member of this club, but I'm hoping that, with your help, I can be. :D

Years ago I got a John Patitucci video and fell in love with the tone of his Sadowsky.

Someone has posted parts of this video on Youtube.

This is a sample of its slap tone.

This is a sample of its fingerstyle tone.

I've just sold a couple of basses and would very much like to get a 5 string Sadowsky that sounds like this... but I need help.

Does anyone know anything about John Patitucci's Sadowsky?

Is it a rosewood fingerboard? Does it have an alder body? Was this before Roger's pickups? Does it have EMGs or Bartolinis?

More importantly, can anyone help me configure a bass that would sound like this?

Would [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] hit the target?

Thanks, guys.

I'm strongly considering joining the Sadowsky Club. I've spoken with Kevin at Sadowsky about ordering a NYC Standard 5 with a 24 fret Ebony board on Ash body with either HC or SC pickups. I've read here what KJung and others think about the SC and they sound very interesting. I"ve also listened to Craig Garfinkle's YouTube video demos of his Sadowsky NYC 5 with SC pups and was very impressed.

I'm torn, however, between which pickups to use and what pickup placement to implement (e.g., 60's or 70's jazz placement). Yesterday I played a Metro MS5 and a Metro UV70MB5 at Bass Northwest. Both have HC pups, but the UV had them placed in the 70's jazz position. The UV sounded wonderful-punchy, focused, articulate, but with a very present bottom end if neeeded. Kevin at Sadowsky suggested going with SC pups in the 70's position, with the option of switching out to HC pups if I find the sound too aggressive for my tastes (I play mostly jazz, funk, and some R&B in small clubs in the Seattle Area). Also, I'm somewhat concerned that the 24 fret board might reduce space needed for slapping.

Taking the plunge for a NYC Sadowsky is no laughing matter, so I figured I better consult the TB experts on this subject! Any additional thoughts on my ideas for a custom Sadowsky?

Cheers,

Ted

Hi Ted,
I don't mean to confuse you any further, but you may want to consider a mahogany body with the ebony board. Here's mine...

Not exactly your "classic J" but a wonderful combo worth considering. The mahogany body adds a nice low-mid push (read: "warmth/organic" emphasis) to the overall tone. However, it still sounds "like a Sadowsky" in the mix. Mine has HC's.

Cheers,
Kevin

Glad u dug the track, most of those tracks are a year or few old, exept for the jazz clip. My BSR5J, which I just sold, is on every tune on my myspace. When you think of me' was recorded on an expensive SSL board, it helped!! Havent gotten a chance to record the sad though.....

Now we're talkin! Great looking bass and very close to what I am thinking of ordering. Are those HC or SC pickups?

As I've posted earlier, my main concern now with ordering a 24 fret fingerboard with JJ pickups is adequate space for slapping. Is there enough room on your bass for slapping?

SC pups.Wouldnt have it any other way! Poor Kevin, I bugged the hell outta him trying to figure out my bass. I wanted the 70's spaced pups, but they wouldnt do the trial return, so I wussed out........lol

its possible, just might not be as comfortable. but try PM'ing bikeplate. i'm pretty sure he has tried a 24 fretted j-style.

and have you tried PM'ing craig hisself? he did both the HC and SC's in that bass, and he seemed to like the SC's more.
