Ted - the red 24/4 with big singles is my bass. FWIW I'm not a slapper at all, but I do it a bit for my own amusement. I only pop with my index finger, and have no problem finding space to do so with the BSs. If you were a 2 or 3 finger popper I guess it could be an issue.

Thanks for stepping into the conversation. Beautiful bass! I also only use my index finger for slapping. My MTD 535 has about 2 inches between the neck pickup and fingerboard, which is plenty of space. The 24 fret Sadowsky with J pickups appears to have about 1 and a half inches between the neck pickup and fingerboard. Is that about right?
+1 Even tho I personally didn't order that one originally, it's exactly as I would have. I don't mind them on my MV5, but very few of my other basses have face markers and I really like it that way. My all time favorite look for a fingerboard is old school plain black (gaboon) ebony with NOTHING on it. No markers, no frets, no nothing. I'm not good enough to play one, but I love the look!

Ok, I measured it - with big singles it's only an inch and 5/16", so 1.5" is probably about right for standard J pickups.

Here is my 24/4, Ted. There is def more room to slap on a regular JJ from Sadowsky. If I had it to do again, and slap was a big part of my playing, Id order the same bass with Soapbars in the modern positions. As a matter of fact, I might just do that in a few days. LOL Time for another new bass Sadowsky!
As far at the pickup placements go, '60s positions JJ's are much more versatile, IMO. They sound better in more different types of music in my experiences with these basses. The UV basses sound good but the '60s JJ's sound good in EVERY situation. I own them all so I think my opinion is valid. I wish you luck with your order

Thanks for your input on this, Rob. I was hoping you'd reply as I could tell from reading through the thread that you have a great deal of experience with Sadowsky's of all types. That said, would you say there is at least adequate room for slapping on a 24 fret fingerboard with JJ pickups? If I had an inch and a half of room for slapping I would probably be okay.HI

Thanks for the input on the pickup placement question-the info really helps! I'm definitely concerned with placement choice, considering that I can change pickups between SC and HC at any time, but will have to live with the placement once the bass is built.

Its doable. I had an Alembic Spoiler for most of my life. It had no room to slap but I made due. I just feel if you have a choice, 21 fret boards would make more sense.
Do you know about the Will Lee model coming out? 22 frets, J body, pickguard and control plate, single coils, d-tuner. 4 string only, I think. Might be the ticket for you. You should call Kevin and get the lowdown. They are showing them at NAMM. Ive seen a number in person at the shop. Awesome pieces

You should really just buy that bitchin' black UV jazz with the black pickguard that's on the site...
...Then sell it to me in about 6 months when you're ready for a new one

I heard the only difference between the Will Lee and a normal Sadowsky is that the Will Lee only transmits half the notes you play wtih it. It also plays them in time and never slaps dominant sevenths over major seventh chords.
