Yeah, I definitely like the HiBeams better on my MV5.

On my 24F-5, the blues work pretty well, and I even like the older blacks on that bass. I am going to start visiting other strings on that bass tho... just to see what happens.

Ok,
just got back from rehearsal. I decided t took an amp and cab with me, because I am never happy with the one provided at the rehearsal space.

I took my Sadowsky with SC pickups and now the rotosound 66 (40-100), my LMII marco edition and my Berg AE210.

I kept asking the other guys all the time: Am I too loud? They kept saying NO!
Seriously, I never sounded so good and so clear. I thought I was very loud, just because I could hear everything so clearly! Nobody complained about my volume (what they usually do with the rehearsal space supplied amp, and that I keep fighting with because I can never hear me, despite it being a famous brand and having a 410+115 cab setup of the same famous brand).

So, long story short, my sound was awesome today. I think the main ingredient today was the Berg AE210. WOW, this cab is really awesome.

D'Addario XL170s for the win! Actually, I use those on everything except my Sadowsky -- blue label SS are reserved for the tiger's eye.

Took your advice and Emailed Roger. He replied straight away:

Dear Rod,
I can only guess two things---a bad pickup or a cold solder joint.
I would have your tech reheat and resolder all the connections on the volume, pan and VTC. If that does not fix it, I would suggest you replace the bridge pickup.

I'll have new SC pups in hand Thursday and will report back later. Thx one and all.

For those who have played Sadowsky's with Brazilian rw and Madagascar rw:

Have you found any differences in tone, feel, looks, ...?

I know that morado is quite different to the other rosewood, but what about Brazilian and Madagascar? Braz is more expensive, but is this only due to the demand/supply or there are anything that makes it more desirable over Madagascar?

The Madagascar board I have on my RV5 is very red versus the more brown look of the Brazilian. I do not notice meaningful tone differences between different varieties of RW that I have played on RV's. To me, it's more about what you want the bass to look like.... dark brown versus the more red color.

I do feel the Morado boards (which I think have a finish on them... is that right?) are a nice combination of that hard, finished maple feel and response, with the look of a medium brown RW board.

IMO and IME there.

Here's a pretty good picture representing the color of the Madagascar board... very red, followed by a picture of the Indian RW board (almost identical look to Brazilian) on one of my Alleva's... much more dark chocolate. I like the look of both!

Both look good to me too. So if tone and feel is the same I think I'll go Madagascar.
I'm thinking about something like this:

This one has a Braz. board that I like a lot, but I think that I'll also like it with a Mad. board.

That's a NICE looking bass. The cool thing about the Madagascar boards with tort is that they really pick up the red tones in that guard. However, that darker board really goes nicely with the natural ash finish. I'm not sure how the more 'red' board would look with that body.

I assume you can specify a general look to the board (i.e., dark versus light, brown versus more red, solid versus some 'streaking' like in the bass in your picture, etc.).

Cold solder joint... sounds familiar... :smug:

Didn't think of the bad pickup tho... thing is, I'd DEFINITELY suspect a cold solder joint first by far. Pickups do fail, but I think it's pretty rare.

Interesting story related to the above:
One of my basses, a fodera, sounded very strange from the moment I got it. I took it to Joey and after a lot of investigation, even changing the whole preamp, it was discovered that I had a bad bridge pickup.
Joey changed the pickup for me (EMG J at bridge) and commented that in all these years he never saw a bad EMG before.
Well, guess there is always a first time. :)

You Saw It!!! That is not fair!!! So how far along was it??? I know it is due to be finished this month. The wait it killin' me!

The only part I've seen and touched was the neck when I was there in October. But even then it had not been finished or re-shaped yet.....
