Gee...thought I had added a thread subscription to this, but guess I needed to post. Well, here 'tis.

Anyway...just to clarify my bass has an ash body, and is a Standard model (no pickguard).

Can't wait for NAMM and the 5 string Metro PJ bass. :hyper:

I'm sure there's been discussion of this before, I've even read some of it, but just to get more feedback:

I have an ash/morado NYC 5-string with Sadowsky HC pickups. I want a more aggressive and present low mid punch, so I was thinking of getting either the Sadowsky single coils or the Nordstrand Big Singles (or maybe another Nordstrand model?)

Can anyone illuminate me as to the tonal differences between these options? I don't want to lose the clarity of the Sadowsky sound, but I want a more raw sound. Also I would like to be able to solo (or almost solo) the neck pickup like I do on my Fender. Currently the sound gets lost unless I favor the bridge pickup.

If it makes a difference, I currently almost always run the bass passive. Not because I have a passive fetish or anything :), but it feels a bit better that way.

You would have to route the bass to fit in the Big Singles, so that wouldn't work. Those pickups, while they sound great, will suck the J right out of that bass. They are much more 'soapbar' sounding than J sounding, much less J single coil.

Both the Nordstand single coil J pickup that Roger offers, and his Sadowsky single coil (which is some variant of the wonderful Antiquity II pickup from Seymour Duncan, from what I understand) are KILLER with the ash/maple, and I assume ash/morado J basses. The Nordstrands are a little fatter and warmer, although you can sizzle them up easily with the preamp (listen to that clip on Roger's NYC in-stock' section of his thread... I believe those are the Nordy singles). The Sadowsky singles (which I use) are quite punchy, growly and aggressive.

I think I've posted that one of the cool things about the single coils is that since they move the treble voicing down a bit from the quite hi fi top end of the HC's, I find I can actually use the treble boost on the pre with them. At just slightly on, it adds a nice sheen for that 'Tal Wilkenfeld' fingerstyle 'click', which I very much did. With the HC's, the treble boost seemed to sit right where the treble response of those pickups already was screamin'!

So, it would be the Sadowsky singles all the way for me. They add a bunch of character and growl to the brighter ash/maple (and I assume Morado.. which sounds and feels more like maple than RW to me) basses.

IME and IMO!!!!

I have an ash/morado NYC 4 with a maple top. I just took the HC's out and installed Nordstand NJ's. Installed easily, no mods. They sound very nice. Different animal from the HC's. More my sound. Definately gives the bass a new character. That being said, my NYC 5 has Roger's Singles in it and that bass kills!! Its ash/maple. Soundmen love it and give me compliments!! Youd be happy either way so get on it!!! LOL

Sounds like just the ticket. Thanks KJung! I guess I'll have to buy the SCs new, I see tons of HCs in the classifieds but nobody seems to sell their SCs. I guess that's a clue.

Unless some kind soul on this thread has a pair of 5-string SCs they want to part with...
