Finally got it. I’ll say I was a little worried when I picked it up (never having held one) and playing Pedulla MVP the last 10 plus years. The action was terrible - but after about 10 minutes I was pretty blown away! Better pics later - can I join the club

I bought this bass off from Roger about 5-6 weeks ago. It truly is a phenomenal bass and extremely well built. Quality and attention to detail are top notch. I love the ultra vintage 20 fret feel with modern sound from the pre amp. Roger was really great to work with. Initially I struggled with the 5 strings (I’ve been a 4 guy) but not I’ve got it. Just a beautiful instrument. I put some TI flat wounds on it and it’s the perfect jazz bass sound to me…

Congratulations! I really like -20 models, rounded fretboard end seems to me nicer than -21 fret overlap (by the way I never play there). 20 frets feels more traditional and vintage to me.
Personally I also play UV 20 pj5 string and it feels very natural to me after years on 4 strings.

I had a little time tonight, and as the for sale thread is getting zero action, I figured I’d do a couple things to the bass and see what happened. I changed string to my favorite D’Addario Nickel 45-130. Then I gave the neck a little relief as I had some buzz on the middle frets. Then I tweaked the action and intonation a little. Hmm. It’s a much nicer playing, feeling and sounding bass. Maybe it’s ok that it hasn’t sold.

If I hadn't just picked up a German ML 5-21 PJ a few months ago I'd have jumped on yours. Getting that satisfied my Sadowsky 5 string itch and burned down all of my GAS funds.

Could be a price issue. It seems the Japan version of the Metro Express sold new for around $2k. The positive of the less than great RSD Metro Express basses made in China is that the Japanese version have retained their value on the used market and typically sell for around $1700-2000.

I’ve seen plenty of pricing anomalies lately. Basses selling at what I’d consider to be inflated prices (20% above my estimate of value); and Japan Metrolines going for south of $2K. Sort of like fishing. Choose your bait and tackle. Then wait and see.

I often change strings when I get "that feeling" so that's an old trick for me. The action and neck relief were done because I detected a little buzz around the 7th fret. I generally don't have to touch my necks after they have been set up - even in my crappy climate.

As for asking price, yeah, it might be a little high, but I have seen Japanese basses in that range. Also, $100 of what I am asking is for shipping (price includes shipping) which is so expensive these days. Could easily be over $100. For me, the 8 pound weight is a factor.

Either way, I am going to give this bass another shot and see what happens. I know it's a great bass. You see them (5JJ or 5PJ) everywhere and they are almost universally loved by players and sound people.

With shipping prices going crazy, I've had very good luck with shipping through PirateShip. It's legitimate UPS and USPS shipping, but you're buying the label through Pirateship and getting the benefit of their high-volume shipping discounts. I have no affiliation other than using them and seeing a significant savings.

The Japanese metrolines seem to be appreciating nicely. Probably a result of new ones being unobtainable but also because they are/were superbly made basses built in a Sadowsky only specialist environment.

Warwick will be selling the higher grade MetroLine pickups soon. I am not selling my NYC pickups. Unless you have the very early MetroExpress production with the hotter preamp, there is no need to replace that.

Oh, so the Sadowsky soapbars I just got from Warwick are not the highest quality ones? How do they compare with the ones made in NYC?
