it was a project that unfortunately went sideways in ways Roger couldn't have anticipated, and he had to abort. probably best to just leave it at that.

Yep, that was one of those "read between the lines" type deals. I appreciate Roger trying to make it happen though. Incidentally, I think there's a picture of it around here somewhere. It was in the background of a snap somebody took while visiting the shop I think.

Do you have personal knowledge of what happened? If not, then maybe we're assuming drama that did not actually happen. It could be as simple as a contractual thing with Marcus and Fender and maybe a non-compete clause or similar. I know nothing of the situation but find it interesting and worthy of discussion, even if some drama is involved.

Absolutely! I have no problem with Vic not wanting to say.

But, maybe in true internet fashion, we make up our own reasons and present them as facts Roger probably made a bass that was so much better than the original it made it and all other similar basses obsolete. Fender, Sire, Atelier, and all others that make similar copies could not have that so they sent a couple knee breakers to Sadowsky strongly suggesting for Roger to cease and desist any further production and to destroy any completed instruments.

There, mystery solved.

Would love to see the picture of the 40th Anniversary Bass. It's a shame things didn't work out, but also hard to understand given Sadowsky Tokyo and Atelier Z were pumping out Marcus Miller style basses for ages.

I did actually go on the site and check out NYC prices ($5800, iirc) which I thought was reasobable, ie, something I might pay, but currently I'm also looking at Metro's.
I was 'advised' by the seller of J Metroline that the quality of this J bass was far superior of the German lines. Now, maybe he would say that but I'd be interested to get a wider view on Japanese over German for Metrolines quality differences or similarities.
I take it is a given that NYC are a step up in the brand.

Back in the day Roger himself stated that there was little if any difference between the Japan made metrolines and NYC. NYC provided far greater options and was chambered, but other than this the Japan metrolines were supposedly up there with NYC. Cannot comment on the German ones, other than the Japan metrolines were built in a Sadowsky specific space whereas the German ones are built in the Warwick factory.

Being the person who owned both Japanese and German Metrolines I can tell you that I prefer the German metroline over the Japanese ones. The build quality on my German metroline is exceptional. There are some small improvements like invisible fret end, adjustable nuts, and slimmer neck(my preference). Mine is one of the earlier ones so there were some electronic issues but they are all fixed in the current production. The new ones even have chambered body to keep the weight light.

As stated above the Kikuchi MetroLine were on a par with NYC production only differing in chambering and wood selection including fancy pressed tops. Now that has been incorporated into the Warwick MetroLine. Additionally, again mentioned above, are new features like invisible fret ends. That appears to be a Warwick innovation I haven’t heard that NYC has incorporated. Fancy custom pressed tops are still a NYC exclusive although Warwick has introduced standard selection fancy tops in its Masterbuilt line. At NYC prices.
