Hi, I need your experience and advice…
My Sadowsky is a Modern 5 Singlecut,
I play it regularly in a more or less classic Blues/ Funk/ Rock - Band. So I am very happy with sound and versatility of the singlecut ( with the
original Sadowsky Blue Label steels)
Yesterday I was invited to play in a 70s-Stevie - Wonder - Coverband. With help of the VTC I was able to get a satisfying sound. But I would like to go even more toward the sound of Stevies classic records (or maybe Herbie Hancocks funky output with Headhunters to mention another soundideal).
What strings you would think useful for both of my band projects? Or should I try other pre amp settings with the steels?
( Yesterday I had Balance in middle position, VTC ca 40%; treble/bass at
10%; Will Lee Preamp off.

When you are talking early 70s Stevie and Paul Jackson with the Headhunters, you are talking P-Bass.
I would start with the balance all the way to the neck pickup and and maybe add just a bit of the bridge pickup while keeping the VTC rolled off as much as possible. Treble all the way off and bass as needed.
Too much bass with the neck pickup only will get muddy pretty quick.
It won't sound exactly like a P but it should get you closer.

Means no treble boost on the 2-band eq and VTC set to maximum treble dampening.
Am EQ die Höhen komplett ohne Boost und das VTC-Poti auf maximale Dämpfung der Höhen einstellen.

This sounds really fat! Regarding Paul Jackson and his bass on Herbies Chameleon… it sounds muffled, almost
kind of distorted. What do you think? Palm mute? Effect?

He used a Fender Telecaster with Hi-A pickups, rotosounds and 4 Polytone amps. Bit of overdrive from the amp but no effects that I can hear (other than compression).
He usually plays finger style closer to the bridge pickup but uses his thumb too. Sounds like he isn't palm muting much, strings sound fairly dead and don't have much sustain.
Just to double check: you're not talking about the synth bass line in the first half of the tune right?

I am pretty sure that the bass line on the original album version of Chameleon is a keyboard bass played by Herbie.

My Modern 5 Singlecut with stock tuners
weighs 3,703 kg / 8,16 lbs
Wood combination is ash/ maple- what about yours? I am not sure but I think the Will Lee Model has a chunkier neck, that would be an explanation too?

No, it's the other way around: The Will Lee models have a slimmer neck than the normal Sadowskys. It will mostly boil down to natural variance in wood density, my Will Lee 5er is also ash / maple. I also learned in one of the factory tour videos that they do not chamber the natural colored bass bodys (those without a top at least) for aesthetic reasons. They select the body blanks accordingly, because they advertise absolute bass weights to be around (and below) 4.0 kg.
The limited edition Modern 5er is has an okoume body with walnut top and a roasted maple neck with ebony fingerboard. So that one will definetly be chambered.

It is killing me to have to do this, but I have to put my recent acquisition up for sale. I bought brand new two months ago as a gift to myself. Alas, one of my kids needed a hospitalization shortly after I got this. He's doing great now. But the bills are coming in. Sorry I know everyone has a sob story.

I want to say thank you to all those in the Sadowsky community who shared their sentiments or reached out privately with words of support. The MetroLine has sold to an outstanding person with a kind heart. Like others have said, we do what we have to do for our kids and families. Most of us here don't have to rely on bass playing to put food on the table. All the basses, amps, pedals, and "stuff" we love is just that....stuff. And we'd dump all of it for a healthy and safe family. Thank you everyone, and to all the dads out there, Happy Father's Day.
