I don't think this is against popular sentiment. At least KJung and I agree we feel the blacks work a bit better on these, but we both feel the blues work better on the JJ/PJ's.

For steels I prefer the black label, stiff, bright, and incredibly solid. For nickels I like the blues better, they're really full and punchy with a nice feel and plenty of top end. The black nickels sound good but a little boring to me, and the blue steels feel and sound odd to me (hard to put words on it) and I don't like the lower tension on the B relative to the blacks.

They're all good strings, but that is how my preference breaks down.

I've pretty much only used them on various vintage style Sadowsky Js, and I don't think I've used the blue nickels on a 5 string, only an MS4 and a P-bass. The blue steels I've also used on a modern 5.

I also like DR hi beams an awful lot on these basses, just wish the B string was a little more solid for the 5's. That is where the black steels really shine for me.

That makes perfect sense. In all those cases I'd also prefer the blues over the blacks.

THIS is the interesting case to me. Did you ever use the blacks on the modern and compare? This is the specific case where I personally prefer the blacks over the blues.

Well, yer talkin' to a HUGE DR HB fan here. In fact, that's my string of choice and pretty much all I use on my NYC JJ5 (no frills natural ash/maple). I was just keeping it about the blue/black comparison for this particular sub-thread.

Yeah, I think I'd also recommend the same thing. I mean, for the "vintage" look, I think you at least have to at least "indicate" a pickguard, but I don't see any reason to limit that pickguard requirement to an opaque one, because yeah, that's some killer flame... :)

Or get both pickguards so you can switch out for different looks.
