After that last post I realized I hadn't given the blue steels much of a fair shake. They're really different than other strings and I think the "surprise factor" turned me off. I put them back on the MV5 and spent some time with them.

I think for the slap and for the kind of percussive fingerstyle I like to often do, they're not the right string. Hi beams are great for that, and the black steels are great too in their own way. They get a tight grind and spank that jumps out of the mix and works great. The blues when you do that have a kind of an odd clack I don't dig.

But if you set the bass up low and play smooth and supportive fingerstyle with no fret grind, that is where the blues shine. They are really "meaty" sounding like that. A little bass boost and a pan to the neck pickup and they just sound, big, fat, and great ... almost a paul mccartney tone.

Interesting strings ... really different from most of the steels I've used.

Interesting, do your thoughts about the blue steels translate to the blue nickels? I am really digging them so far. They are supportive, fat, warmer than the steels, smooth, balanced and punchy in the mids, clear, and sweet. The lows are really warm and fat, with a great feeling of support. But, everything is still defined down low. The mids and highs are very clear, and a sweet as could be. No harshness here. I love the feeling of the strings as well. They are super smooth, and as a result there is the least string noise and clacky out of any rounds I have used.

edit: I play pick style a lot!
In the beginning my MV5 had Sadowsky SCs and Black Steels. Then I switched to Blue Nickels to get more warm bottom.

Then I put Nortstrand SC in my MV5. With the the nickels, the sound almost became too fat. So I switched back to Black Steels.

Maybe I have to try the Nordstrand/Blue Steels combo....

So I found an order sheet in the mail this morning... Which means I'm now officially waiting for my new baby...

Specs:

Standard 5
Quilted maple top on swamp ash
Custom dark blue burst
Brazilian rosewood fingerboard
Abalone face dots with an extra dot @ the 21st fret position
1 3/4" nut width
18mm string spacing @ the bridge
Nordstrand Big Singles in the 70s position

And all this in a lefty version, of course...

I can't wait :hyper:.

Well I have been bass-less/amp-less for about 2 months. My work wasn't going the way I though it would and I am happy to say that I will be going back to school in the fall for my teaching degree and then moving to New Jersey within the next 2 yrs. I just pulled the trigger on that MV5 in the classifieds and can't wait to get back into playing.:bassist:

I spoke with the floor manager about that bass earlier this year. He told me it was bought from Barard and lasted a whole week before it was put on hold and taken off the floor. The salesman who put the bass on hold parted ways from the store and the customer never made good on the deal, so it sat in the basement for almost a year until it turned up about three months ago and was put back on the sales floor.
Getting back to my conversation with the manager, he told me that if the bass didn't sell at $2750 he'd discuss a lower price. I ended up buying a Metro I like very much, so hopefully someone here can get it for a good price.
