If you have the funds, I'd have them put the clear guard on and also cut a tort guard so you can swap it out if you like.

I'm pretty sure Roger knows. ;)

The Vintage Metro's came 1st. The Ash/Mpale was geared more towards players that like 70's J's and the Alder/Morado was geared towards players that like 60's style J's.

The UV70 Metros came later on and they were offered in different combos because they were offered like that in the 70's. I don't remember there being any Alder/Morado UV70's, though but they my be available now.

I'm pretty sure there's more to it but I don't remember.

I've used both. The Sadowsky singles are a bit more mid present, a bit more growly in the upper mids, and have a bit more lower treble 'J Bass' type top end than the more upper treble, cleaner sizzle of the HC's. They both sound great.... I greatly prefer the Sadowsky singles in the ash/maple J models. It seems to make a little less of a difference in the ash/alder models, given that wood combination softens the modern sheen of the HC's a bit and adds a little bit more low mid punch.

Also, Roger's shielding is so good that, unless you are totally soloing a pickup, the hum is not a problem. It's very easy to dial in that 'just off blend center' sweet spot that will give you 80% of the single pickup tone with only 10% of the hum.

WONDERFUL pickups and a great choice if you have an ash/maple vintage or standard IMO and IME. I have clips of my NYC Vintage with the Sadowsky singles posted within the last few pages of this thread (although my hosting website is in the process of a server upgrade today). That clip is through a very aggressive cab though (a growly, grindy small neo 115 cab... so that's about as growly and aggressive as they get). As soon as the server comes back up, I'll post a clip of that bass through a little more transparent, mellow rig.

That's exactly what i got ... Vintage 5 Ash maple top body, maple fret board and Sadowsky singles. I'm diggin' this bass a lot! I wanted that "Vintage J sound" , Roger suggested the singles and I agreed. But i was curious about the humcancelling since they are very popular

When I had the Sadowsky singles installed, I went from 'really liking' the Sadowsky J's to absolutely loving them. The ash/maples with singles still sound like 'Sadowsky' basses, but I agree, the Sadowsky singles (wonderful pickup) moves them to what most would consider a more 'J like tone'.

The HC's are great, and IMO are more popular because they are the standard offering in the Metro's (and the NYC's if you don't say anything:D), and many are IMO overly concerned about single coil hum (which is very easily controlled unless totally soloing a pickup is key to your tone).

I LOVE the sound of my ash/maple/Sadowsky single in a mix... it just grinds and punches!!!!! Isn't it a cool take on a 'J Bass' tone?!

I used to have a Metro UV70 ash/morado fiver with the HCs and I swapped them out for the singles and I felt the tone was much improved -- more punchy and growly, for lack of better terms. More dynamic somehow.

Anyway, I sold that Metro and I would have definitely had singles put in my Will Lee that's on order but they are standard anyway on that model. :cool:

Instead of cutting another PG I would stick with only one, say the clear one, and have them cut another bass to go with that PG to switch basses whenever you feel like :D:cool::D

Common, whatever you choose will, with no doubt, look feel & play amazing. Go with your heart man!

Pure opinion, but seeing a clear guard on a beautiful piece of top veneer reminds me of those plastic slipcovers that some of our grandparents put on the 'good couch' to keep it clean back in the day. Totally cheeze looking to me personally, and Roger's poly finishes are so hard that 'protection' is kind of a moot point.

IMO!
