Suffered some major battery death, but managed to get a few in ok. The grain in the body is really nice, and the grain in the neck and board is super straight. Man this thing has tone.

+1 on this. I would love to have a Sad fretless, but want to know what you guys think about them.
I played a fretless Modern somewhere a while back (maybe a GTG) and it was SMOKING. That big, punchy, low mid present voicing really brought out the mwah and the organic mid warmth. Really nice voicing for a fretless.
I can't quite get my 'ears' around a Standard or Vintage J fretless though, since, especially with the stock HC's, the voicing of those basses is a bit mid shy (especailly in the all important low mids for fretless), and deep, and sizzly, which is (at least for me) the exact opposite voicing I would want in a fretless (and especially if you combine that inherent voicing with an ebony board, that 'glasses' up the sound even more). Just a guess there, though.

On my new J5 vs my old one, my raves about the new one aren't meant to suggest that I think it's way way better from a tonal/playability aspect. Actually, I still very much love my older one, and while I do think the newer one sounds a bit better, I attribute that more to the chambers (my older one is a solid body) probably the most, and maybe whatever subtle effects there might be from the maple top or the different cut of maple in the neck and board.
In fact, ironically, at least with 5249, the HC's, even with the 250K vol pot in there, really compare a lot more favorably to the SC's than I expected they would. That might also account for some of my particular enthusiasm (as well as new bass syndrome of course
).
Anyway, just to kinda' put things in perspective. One of the great things about the Sadwosky basses, and maybe even in particular the NYC basses, you definitely don't have to get a bunch of fancy options to get ALL the magic.
