just got some blue label steels in to put on my 78 jazz. they replaced a set of lo riders and they are ever so slightly higher tension than the drs as i now have a touch more relief than i did before.

Depends on which DR's. The round core DR's have low tension, but the hex cores have normal (high?) tension. So, Lo Riders have higher tension, Hi Beams have lower tension... go figure.

+1, the Hi Beams and Sun Beams are really low tension. The Lo Riders are more 'normal', but still feel 'looser' than the Sadowsky Blues, much less Blacks to me.
Charles, I suspect there's little difference, but it's been too long since I've used the blue labels to give you an accurate answer.
With all the discussion lately on single coils, passive operation, preamp, blend, etc., etc., I recorded a clip focusing on the operation and functionality of the wonderful Sadowsky pre, including using the blend to maintain hum cancelling behavior from the single coils but getting a solo'd pickup tone.
You can again really hear the unusual (not unusual for Sadowsky but for J Bass type instruments in general) ash/maple/60's pickup position spec that I dig so much... grindy, bright, burpy, growly all at the same time IMO! Sadowsky Blue Steels, well broken in.

that is a great set up , those berg cabs are amazing , I use 2 ae112's with either a mark bass head of more so a GB shuttle 9.0 with my ash maple 5 Sadowsky , I think it is 60's spacing , it does have single coils , it was built in 1999 , I am thinking the 60's spacing was pretty standard then , great video job , thanks
Thanks. I really dig that combination. It is a little bright and burpy solo, but in a mix, it really works well.
My 60's comment was more about most thinking of RW/alder J's with 60's placement and ash/maple with 70's placement as representing the 'classic' J sort of thing. I just really dig the ash/maple/60's thing that is 'stock' on the Sadowsky vintage and standards with that wood combination... kind of the best of all worlds for me... bright and aggressive but still a bit more burpy and punchy than a pure 70's style J.
Craig, I have a '97 Sadowsky 5 that I've had for over 10 years. It is the most remarkeable bass and most likely the "desert island or to the grave bass" for me. It sets a very high standard in my mind and very few basses have come close to being what this one is.
Awesome tone and Beautiful Bass. I just love the Ash/Maple tone. Keep the clips coming. You are always very helpful in your clips. I am so amazed at how much of a difference a very small blend makes. Last night I made very small blend adjustments all night, used the VTC slightly a couple of times and very slightly boosted the bass a couple of times. I am getting used to the Sadowsky preamp and really digging it. You and Vic are like an Ash/Maple SC Encyclopedia.
I want to see you cut loose in one of your clips. I would like to hear some slap tone from a Sadowsky with those specs .

It is GREAT slap bass... bright and grindy, but all the mids coming from the single coils and that 60's bridge pickup really make the slap punch out nicely!Yes , mine is a forever keeper , others will and have come and gone , I just am needing a 4 string ash maple to add to the keep forever club ,
That's exactly why I have this one.
I can personally attest to the fact that this is a KILLER bass.
Looks better in person though -- that photo doesn't quite do that bass justice.

Has anyone here ever compared the old Bart TCT to Rogers current pre side by side? How do they compare? I have only had the chance to play mine (with the TCT).

I can just tell you can really play and if you wanted to cut loose you really could. I have seen the slapping in your clips I was wanting one that had more slapping and different slap tones. You have some very nice basses and rigs and I always find your clips helpful. Thanks for posting them for us.

Apples and oranges. Rogers preamp boosts bass at 40 hZ and operates boost only while the Bart boosts bass at 30 hZ and runs boost/cut. Both are good but what is "better"'is strictly a matter or preference.
Actually, he didn't ask which one was "better", so you didn't really need to go there.
He asked a perfectly sensible (and IMHO a very interesting) question... just how they compared. I'd actually have the same question for anyone who's played with both. Not that I'm looking for something else, because I'm 100.00% happy with mine the way they are, but it'd still be interesting to know.
Also, were you quoting your bass center frequency from the Bart site, or is that actually from a Sadowsky spec somewhere? I ask because I thought I'd read in the past that his TCT was not a standard/generic one, but I'd like to know for sure if someone can confirm one way or another.
The original TCT that I used prior to 1990 had the same frequency centers as mine....40Hz and 4KHz. It was boost only.
General consensus at the time was the Bart was a little "dirtier" and the Sadowsky had a fuller, cleaner range.
