I did get a chance to spend some time with the bass last night. It is exactly what I was looking for..it sounds killer and fills the gaps in the tones that I could not cover as easily with my other basses.

Of course, the first thing I did was take the Blue Label Steel strings off and put on Blue Nickels. I just really don't like SS strings. So, if anyone wants some Blue Label steels that were used for about 30 seconds, let me know. I will make you a deal. :)

I can see where the nickels would sound great with that spec with the P pickup and the ash. Nice... brings out the growl more.

I haven't played nickel strings in years, but I have been considering the same thing for my PJ5. Does anyone know if the Sadowsky nickels are otherwise the same as the steeles in terms of tension, etc?

My bass came with a new set of Sadowskly Blues SS (45s), and I like the feel, but the slightly less edgy tone of nickels sounds appealing.

I'm trying some blue nickels next time, myself... I had flats on my MV4 for a few months, but they were too dead for me. The fresh blue SS strings are really crispy and sizzly after the flats. ;)

In with Sadowsky #183 per Roger "early 80's can't give you an exact date"

It has the stock Bartolini TCT Pre and EMG's and a Fender pickup cover on it.

I just got a pot replaced and had the neck adjusted and it plays like a dream. I've been playing my Smith a lot but since getting it set up by a pro I can't put it down. It is one well built neck and this particular body just sings. I play it unplugged all the time.

I will have this one forever.

Yes you do! They are my favorite nickel string I have ever used..IMO, they are the best of both worlds. They are bright like a steel string but still don't have that zingy high end that is like a nails on a chalk board to my ears. They feel great, have a higher tension than a lot of other nickels. But, still feel great under your fingers and are easy to play. Can you tell I like Blue Label Nickels? ;)

IME, there is little difference in tension between Sadowsky nickels and rounds within the same color group: black versus blue. The blue label strings (regardless of type) have less tension than the black labels.

FWIW, I prefer the tone of the blues (nickel or steel), but I mostly play hard rock so the stiffer black labels work better under my fairly heavy touch. Yes, I'd be happy with the blues if adopted a lighter touch and/or raised the action, but I tend to take the path of least resistance.

Anyway... I think you should try the blue label nickels, they might well be what you're looking for.

+1 The Blues are high tension compared to, for example, DR's, but man, the blacks are HIGH tension... too much for me, and a bit too ganky in the upper mids (at least the steels).

Which would you say feels stiffer? The SS or the nickel?

That's a really nice looking bass. Love the headstock. What a beauty!!
