This can both drastically shorten a string's life as well as hurt tone right off the bat.
Ok, so curiosity got the better of me. I wanna' compare Carey's HC J (NJS) pickups with the stock HC pickups in my NYC. I've always felt Carey's pickups have a bit more "grunt" than a lot of other pickups, so I ordered a set of NJS pickups today... we'll see how this works. At this point, I'd have various ash/maple Sadowsky basses with the older SD-based SC's, NJ-based SC's, NJ-based HC's, and (I think DiMarzio UJ-based) HC's.
We'll see how it goes.

Why would you be interested in an HC when you can put singles in there? I don't have ANY issues with single coil him (if you use the blend control correctly when favoring one pickup or the other). I see no advantage to having HC's in a J bass at all.
I've already got two ash/maple JJ5's with SC's in them and one ash/maple JJ5 with HC's. I want to see how a different set of HC's in the HC equipped bass might work. I was just going through the list of all the J5 pickups I had in all of them for comparison.

I put the NJFS (same PU to the Fender size spec) in that ASJV I had for a while. I REALLY liked them. I think there is some merit to his claims of making them sound as close to a single coil as possible. They didn't quite have the grit of the stock Fenders, but the low end response was far better and the overall quality was excellent. And that wasn't even paired with the Sadowsky preamp.
On a similar thought, I may try the stock Nordstrand P5 PU in my PJ. Do you think there would be issues with leaving the current Sadowsky PU in the bridge position? I assume it is a hum cancelling PU, but I am not absolutely certain. Is there any merit at all to using a single in that slot instead of the HC?
I also had a set of those in an ADJV and liked them a lot... part of the reason I'm doing this.
I guarantee no problem, and yeah, in a PJ you pretty much gotta' have an HC J for best results. I also actually do like the NP5 better than the previous P5 Roger was using. I A/B'd two NYC Sadowsky PJ5 basses, one with the previous set, and one with the current Nord set, and I definitely feel Roger made a good choice with the switch. IMHO/FWIW.

Nothing wrong with that. Just surprised at the interest in an HC J pickup, since the SC's sound so good in those basses, and really have no downside.
Well, I do play some pretty rude places where even the favoring trick doesn't quite work well enough. Plus, I do still like the variety as well.

Well, that's basically what you're already getting, so "solved".I can't wait.Maybe I should order some NJ5 and then we really could compare.
OK..updated pics...I actaully played it at church two Sundays ago and it rocked! I like the tort guard but I will think I will get a black one when they are in stock. So, I've left the plastic on the tort one, for now.
