Interesting conversation. I didn't really get into flats until I started playing with my 2nd band (rock, alt-country, new orleans, funk, etc.). I have been using a Sadowksy NYC V4 with nickel rounds and a Lakland Skyline Hollowbody with flats. The Lakland is really a studio bass for me, I find it a little uncomfortable live. I had thought of stringing my NYC with flats when I bought my Metro Will Lee. However, I ended up using the Metro Will Lee in my metal tribute band, so it is set up for "D". My latest thinking is to throw a set of flats on my Fender American Standard P (which of course is getting me to GAS for a Sadowsky with flats - either one of the metro PJ's or maybe even a NYC P5). Hmmm. ; )

Regardless, I am a recent convert to flats. They really do work beautifully in certain contexts. Amazing considering I only liked stainless steel strings until a while back!

Indeed. The flame on that top is top notch. I actually got a clear PG with it when I bought it. I thought it looked awesome on it, but it was hazed up pretty bad and had a crack around one of the holes where someone over-tightened it. I was going to get another, but I liked the other two quite a bit as well.

Did a rehearsal last night for a Christmas gig. This one has the strings and the whole bit. Lots of instruments and lots going on.

The conclusion: The modern is me, and I am the modern.

The thing was a well-focused, bottom end tone laser that seated itself boldly and confidently in its rightful place down low. This was my first test of it in a real-life application like this. I don't know how he does it, but it is truly remarkable how a Sadowsky really doesn't shine in all its glory until its working with all the other instruments. Even with a string section (including a DB), piano, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, drums, aux perc and even another set of keys padding the strings, the Modern held its ground FIRMLY.

Any comments I have made about Sadowsky B strings, I have to apologetically retract. At least in the case of this bass. We were doing a ballad last night where I was playing two tied wholes on the low C (Is that C1?) on the B at about 55-60 bpm. My bass was clearly the strongest, clearest and most present part of that foundation.

Can anyone tell I love my modern? :)
