I don't debate this...I just don't use them unless it's specifically called/asked for.

There's a diff between "it works great" and "I personally like it lots"
I certainly won't go as far as to say flats are Giant Tonesucking Wormholes or anything!!!

I tried flats on my basses several times along my playing life and always ended up pulling them off after a couple of days or even a few hours!...until I tried the Sadowsky flats in one of my Sadowsky JJs. They work so well in the mix for the kind of music I'm playing (mix of rock, country, americana...think Springsteen, Petty, The Band,...).
When I bought my PJ I tried the nickels on it and loved them, but I swapped them with the flats that were on my J and after a year and a half, I've tried to put rounds again on the PJ like three times, only to go back to the flats after a few hours of playing...the tone is so solid and warm...authoritative in the mix without any 'gank' and 'clang' on the high end :smug:

I've also tried the 'foam under the strings' thing, but that's not for me; as much as I love the thud and fast decay of the upright bass, I can't get along with it on the electric...I've heard others doing it and the tone was lovely, but it doesn't work for me.

Now that I've been using the wireless on my gigs, I go to the end of the room for the soundchecks and enjoy the way the bass sits in the mix.

+a million!!! I've got your back Fran!!! Jbass-with-rounds- wimps!!!! My NYC PJ5 sounds amazing with D'Addario Chromes on it, and if it wasn't for the fact that my 62' with Labella Jamerson flats is my main bass with flats, I"d still be rocking that setup. And I promise you that my 62' P with flats sounds WAY better than the other truckload of Pbasses i"ve owned with those same strings!!

but IME Sadowsky flats on my Sadowsky P/J is an altogether versatile combination. But then I'm a GB guy. From Glen Miller and Tommy Dorsey to Billy Joel and Elton John in the same set, and everything in between, I've never had such a useful combination.

No, some of us have tried them- a few times- and the results were less than enjoyable.
And I never said they had no tone. They have a tone alright. Then again, so does a Bogdon BassBox.......;)

Mike, Mike,...remember that you're a newbie here, LOL.

I obviously don't like flats for slap and it's obvious that they don't produce a modern tone with all its harmonics and overtones, but for more traditional styles they work great.
I also love their rubbery feel on my fingertips.

A simple "they don't work for what I do" is cool and I see your flats=tone suck back track, and I understand about not liking a Jazz strung with flats, but until you experience the happiness of flats on a P bass, I think you will be missing out on one of the greatest "tones" there is. Do you only paint with one color? Go ahead, step outside your box... ;)

Had a PJ (and a P for a bit) and thought flats were the answer.
Just didn't do it for me.
And you're right, "one" tone......
And, IMO/IME I dispise the feel, and for me the tone just stinks.
They sound good, but still, not a "good" sound that I really dig.
Sorta like that stainless steel strings on a Ken Smith thingy. Man, that sound just doesn't do it for me.

And like Fran said, I'm a newbie, so someday when I get a clue, I'll maybe dig it.;)
