I think Roger killed a kitten and a puppy to make that thing so sweet!!!!
(Dot is still around right Roger??)

Are those Sadowsky stamped tuning machines unique to the WL, or maybe unique the four banger?

I don't think I have ever noticed those before.

Standard on the 4's I've had.

Here's a question for Roger......I know the UltraLites help with neck dive, but the overall mass of say "standard" size keys on the headstock make a difference at all? (ie. help eliminate deadspots/move them etc...). Again, neck dive not in play with this question.

Per my discussion with KJung, I'm gonna give the SC's in my bass a few more gigs, but I may go to HC's as I kinda like the bit smoother (to me anyway) sound.
Plus to soften up this ash/maple combo.

My fav combo was alder/rosewood with HC's in it. But Also had a ash/rosewood that had HC's that KILLED.
So, maybe after the new year if I decide to swap them out I'll let ya'll know and maybe if someone has a set of HC's laying around, we'll swap or sumthin'....

I'll be very interested in hearing the findings if you swap. I never really minded the "rougher" tone of the SCs, I actually like of liked it, but I did find that the bottom end on that bass was a little out of focus for my taste and a bit soft -- at least compared to the other three Sadowskys with which I have experience.

I would think the HCs might tighten it up a bit.

I am definitely in your camp on the Alder/RW. I'm totally loving my Alder/Mor Metro PJ5. Since I put the nickels on it (black label 40s) I REALLY like the vibe. Super smooth. Kind of old-school but with clarity and articulation.

You're saying you find the HC's to be tighter and more focused than the SC's? My experience has been the opposite. Interesting!

No. I don't have any experience with a Sadowsky JJ5 with HCs. My experience is limited to the bridge PU on the PJs.

I replaced the stock SCs in a 2008 Fender ASJV that I had with Nordtrand nj5fs pickups and did see a significant improvement in the low end depth and focus. I was assuming one might see the same in the case of Sadowsky. Although, I can certainly see how in the example I stated, in may have been simply the improvement in the overall quality of the pickups.

Ohhhhh, ok... seriously, yeah, completely not applicable at all. FYI.

Just received my January issue of BP. Not only is Rickey Minor on the cover holding a killer WL4, but there's also an article on Greg Lake (with a nice pic of him holding a Frost Gold Sadowsky VJ4), and an article on Tulley Kennedy (with a pic of his Sadowsky PJ5).

Congrats, Roger!

I've long wanted a Sadowsky, and am thinking about finally doing something about that now.

I love rwinder's ash + maple Vintage for sale in the classifieds.

But ideally I'd like a matching head stock, and perhaps blocks, and perhaps a Will Lee model so I can have the 22nd fret and the 3 band preamp... does anyone have any idea ABOUT what a bass with those specs would cost new?

Given that I play 6s most of the time anyway, I'm wondering if I wouldn't be smarter to get this used Vintage JJ with SCs, if its price was good.

Any advice?

I'd email the shop for a price quote. They respond quite promptly.

I'd say they (HC's) are smoother sounding and not as aggressive or "in your face" than SC's.

Give me that "smoother" 60's type Jazz tone over the more upfront 70's type.

You can get blocks on an NYC..Just no binding.
Oh. I thought I read otherwise on the website. I guess I should ask that question specifically then.

I didn't really ask them for a quote on a spec bass because I didn't want them to take the trouble when I'm very unsure I'll do it, so I asked for a quote on a bass they have in stock that is close to what I was wanting, and then read the site to help me estimate for myself.

Tom7 - since you DID ask "any advice" I'll give you my 2 cents worth.

You say you mainly play 6s. A used Sadowsky would be a great way to test the waters and see if it's for you. If after a while you think it's great and play it a lot, you can decide if it's worth the money to get 1 more fret, blocks etc. You can sell the old one for close to what you paid and put it towards a new order.

Personally (as I've said over and over...) I think a used NYC is one of the absolute best bargains in bassdom. And rwinder's ticks almost every box for me: Vintage style, ash/maple, cool fender custom colour, SCs, nice weight. I'd be on that bass like stink on sh... er, white on rice :D

FWIW this is the route I went a few years ago. I played mostly vintage fenders, needed one 5 so bought a used NYC to "test the waters". Now I have 4 and could use a 5th... it can be a slippery slope. You've been warned :D

I wonder if the "new & improved" edition of the 4 string J HC pup has a bearing on that? (by Dimarzio)

Hey Blair,

I have both the older and newer versions of the HC 4 banger pups in my Standards.

I can't hear a difference between them. Both sound sweet to my ears!! I had HC in my WL too.
I liked them better than the SCs. But, I liked the SCs better in my Standard 5.

The 4 and 5 string HC pups are truely different animals!

. . . I think a used NYC is one of the absolute best bargains in bassdom . . . .

I agree, almost. A used Metro creeps down below $2K. If you don't have to have a particular top/color combo and just want to try your hand on a Sadowsky, the Metros offer every bit of the feel and function of the NYCs. The only trade is that they can be a bit heavier.

A used Sadowsky is a great value any way you look at it.

Hey Guys,

I finally got my Sadowsky a proper setup, the difference is pretty major. My only concern is a "chorus" like sound from my E string, it's weird, that string alone sounds like it has a chorus effect on it. Could it be because of a pickup adjustment maybe? I think the pickups were adjusted from what they were before I brought it in. Any ideas? I have heard of this type issue before, but don't remember the cause.

SpectorDetector asked about this the other day, and there were a couple of responses--one mentioned going in and out of pitch and so on.

A few months ago (and after its trip to NYC for a tuneup), my 2006 MV4 developed kind of a chorus-y sound when I play the open E string. I don't really notice it with the fretted notes. It certainly didn't do this for the first few years I had the instrument.

It doesn't go in and out of pitch--it just sounds like a toned-down version of the opening notes of "Beat It". :atoz: Any ideas on what could cause this open E chorus-y sound? Thanks!

Joey - You could play a BROKEN Sadowsky & it would sound sweet to my ears bro!
You KNOW where I go for a treat (BASSically Speaking of course)
