My Modern has a very thin mylar-like film applied to the back. It seems, to me, to be very similar to the material that was applied to the front nose and mirrors of my Bro-in-law's LS430 that the dealer. You can hardly see it unless you look close, but it certainly durable.

I would go so far as to say that it is practically invisable. I also have it on the front of the bass. Can any of you guys see it in the photos I posted?

I would email the shop. I am guessing they put it on there. They could probably give you more details.

That is put on at the shop so that a new owner can give the bass a good tryout during the 7 day trial period, but still send it back in literally 'like new' condition (no swirls or scratches). As soon as you take that material off, it is 'yours':D It is not meant to be left on there, if we are talking about the same thing.

It's been on there plenty longer than seven days :eek: I don't think it is hurting anything. It seems to be just static fit.

My only concern about something like this is, over time, it may cause a discoloration due to a difference in exposure from where it is, vs where it isn't.

You can also get those pads from various places, which I think might be a better solution, as I think you can very easily slap them on for the gig and then pull them off after. May still have the same discoloration risk, but maybe over a longer period of time.

Personally, I just believe in playing the bass, and not being foolish with belt buckles (turn them to the side a bit) or shirt buttons (no thanks.)

Otherwise, if you have a formal gig to play, and want to protect the bass from buttons, just get those little felt pads that go on the backs of hanging pictures and stick them on the buttons. They come right back off at the end of the night, real easy.

It's really more of a concern with nitro finishes, but it's true poly can show swirls of course. Just depends how particular you are about it.

Again, just explaining why it was put on there by the shop (again, as far as I know), and that, again as far as I know, it in no way is meant to 'stay on there'. Whether it does any harm or not over time, I have no idea.

Nope. not this one. It came to be clean as a baby's arse, and it'll stay that way. Dont need to add no mojo, and got a road worn Valenti if I need mojo and my original gig bass, a 1979 T40.

Although mojo isnt quantifyable and likely doesnt even exist unless it's a passive instrument.

Chasarms, thnx man. I've used static cling mylar to put "stickers" on my instruments before. In fact, there is now a "POW/MIA sticker" on the Sadowsky. I'll "cling" it to keep it mint. Should have thought of that. THNX!

Vic, cant see transparent mylar discoloring a black bass unless we throw some UBER UV's at it over a prolonged period.

Here are some quick and dirty pics of my new bass. I've been getting used to it all weekend and my first band practice with it is tomorrow night.

The specs are:

Will Lee 4

Ash Body / Flamed Maple Top w/ Nitro Finish in Natural Tint
Maple Neck / Flamed Maple Fretboard in Natural Tint
BWB Pickguard
Hum Canceling Pickups
Blue Label Light SS Strings

Weight = 8.25 lbs.


In the last few year, I feel I've gone thru a lot of different basses. I'd always try them at least a few months to see if it was "the bass for me". And while some were very nice, they were never the one.

This one just feels like home. It's so easy to play AND sounds so good. A huge thanks to Roger, Kevin and the rest of the crew for putting this together.

In the original pics, there was some funky shading with the flame in the top. Didn't look too attractive to me. Once I saw it in person however, it wasn't really noticeable.


In all my years on the Forum, I've never joined a club. Time for that to change; this one's a keeper. Can I get a number?
