I play my VM5 and TM5 in passive all the time. I can't comment if my VM gets the 60s vibe, but it certainly sounds like a good passive P.

Hi I used to own a VM4 and now have a VS4 and my experience is that the reverse P in the VM4 doesn't sound particularly vintage.
A passive VS4 with a vintage style pickup will get you there.

I cant get a classic P sound from my VM4. I bought a P bass but the VS4 passive must be pretty close to it. It will be a far better built bass than the Fender IMO. My MarloweDK that i just bought is passive and has a wonderful tone between my Geddy Jazz and my P bass so i reckon the VS4 passive might give you what you're looking for. Not sure how 2nd hand market is over there but you can pick up a VS4 over here for not a lot of money and if pick ups dont suit you then change them for something with a vintage feel.

Dude, just get a passive Made in USA Fender Precision Bass. The best a man (and a woman) can get.

I'm not a fan of the carbon reinforced Fenders, they just don't sound the same to me.

I love the design of the Fender P and have owned many. However, the California II's are far more balanced across the fretboard than most Fenders and the playability is far superior. Better weight too.

I configured my own P-J Sandberg, with a forward-oriented P pickup. To get more of a 60's tone, I had to replace the P pickup with an actual Fender Original, but it definitely sounds like a 60's P now, but with the reduced weight and playability of a Sandberg. Work with your dealer, you can get pretty much anything you want.

I'm planning to order a TT5. Considering whether to request a 3-band preamp or stick with the stock 2-band. I've never had an active bass (and mostly play upright) so don't have a point of reference. Are people generally happy with the 2-band preamp?

Two band works perfect for me. Both my TM5 and VM5 are not shy with the mids.
