Club Sandberg (part 2)

Hi all, I've got a TM5 on the way and am already stressing about strap buttons of all things.

The (really helpful) Sandberg rep tells me their stock buttons are "compatible" with Schaller S-Locks, but I wonder how well they'll really mate and be as secure and rattle free as a fully Schaller button/hook would be.

The other part of the question is, has anyone here fitted the new S-Locks to a Sandberg? I know screw sizes can be different and I don't want to get into drilling different pilot holes or using toothpicks or anything on my new shiny thing.

Anyone have any experience of either on a Sandberg with the new style S-Locks specifically?

I didn't realize anybody actually used Schaller strap locks. I had to look up the S-Locks, those are pretty darn cool. I use Dunlop StrapLoks dual-design buttons, never had a problem and the Sandberg strap button hole accommodated the screw just fine. In fact, I've never run into an issue with a screw not fitting when changing buttons and I've owned way too many basses to count. In other words, I wouldn't worry about it.

Considering a custom medium scale build and checking out dealers. It appears the Sandberg configurator gives you a different price than the dealer price. Also there is not a way to select the 32.5" scale so I can't tell what the uncharge is. The prices I am getting quoted seem to have the medium scale adding an additional $200-$300 to the build.

Anyone have recommendations on a dealer they would trust to move forward with a customer order?

I also own a SR5 Special, and it is simply a fantastic instrument. But if a 5 string Sandberg California Central is similar, then I would be tempted to buy a Masterpiece fretless in tobacco sunburst...

soundpure was very helpful and responsive in helping me out with Sandberg, and their prices are lower than BC.
BC carries a lot of stock, but charges a premium because they have the goods
Jake Austin at sound pure was my sales representative and was very good when I bought my Sandberg

Well, there's always this, the Sandberg Basic:

Same pickup and position as the demonstrated instrument, only this one is available in both 4 or 5 string and 34" or 35" scale and it has 18 to 19.5 mm string spacing (adjustable).

The pickup position of both instruments is a little more towards the neck than a Stingray, giving it more low end. It does have about the same amount of 'in-your-faceness' and growl when digging in as the Stingray though. As I put it in another thread: as if a p-bass and a Stingray had a baby :)

By the way, mine is an oldie and has the old style bridge. The newer one looks splendid!

Great looking instrument.

I would love Basic but with the California headstock....I like 4 in a line tuners :).
They actualy made few called Rayman.

I too got mine at Soundpure. With Sandberg they let you take things home to demo them for a few days. I tried a TT5 before settling on the VM5. I am local though, not sure how it works (or if?) when shipping is involved. The rep mentioned that the configurator should not be taken too literally. The bass I ended up with cost slightly more than a heavily relic-ed TM5 they had despite the latter costing slightly more on the configurator. I liked dealing with Soundpure I'm general though, I'd buy another instrument from them.

I also had a good experience emailing Jake from Soundpure.

Might be worth emailing some European dealers like Thomann for quotes too - the quote they provided me for a medium scaled alder bodied VS4 passive back in December seemed a good bit lower than the quotes I got from US dealers, but not sure about duties etc.
