So are these Alnico's, or would I be better served grabbing a set that's closer to that 60's/70's Fender tone? If so, any suggestions you might be able to offer?
Those are Alnico and in real life are vintage sounding (sorry about posting that video). Obviously strings will make a big difference too.
When I got my my passive TT4 I had to adjust the pickup height quite a bit to get that vintage alnico feel.
The Delanos are not quite as fussy about height as they are not quite as dynamic sounding, at least to me.
I can get a perfect 60's tone from mine, (the 70's sound has the bridge pickup in a different position to the TT4 and that tone is generally associated with ash/maple instruments too).
This is probably a better video for the Alnicos. The pickups might be in different positions though.

Agreed, but it sounds great! I think the Alnico has more character than my ceramic P/Us. I’d try them but can’t seem to find Sandberg Alnico for my VM5. I’d like to cop some vintage but also some modern tones like these.Doesn’t sound like a stock passive Fender to me. More of a modern tone without being too harsh or too aggressive.

The pickups are called Delano X-Tenders or something like that and the preamp I think is made by
Glockenklang I think. I am sure some of yall that know all about Sandbergs can correct me if I am wrong
bottom line Sandbergs are awesome instruments. But let's keep that our secret in the US of A because it seems like they are at bargain prices used in the US. lol
right now it came wearing 45-125 DR pure blues strings and I use 40-120 DR pure blues strings so I will even like it better once these strings get old and need changing.
I'm gonna need someone to talk me out of selling my VM5. Got a crazy deal on a microphone, but it was still about $2k over my budget (which was $0) and now I either start selling off a whole bunch of lesser things or let go of a big (beloved) thing.
I simply have way too many basses, and none of them are really worth much money except for the Sandberg. My second most valuable is a Sterling Ray34 HH, which may fetch $600 if I'm lucky, then after that we're looking at a bunch that may be worth $200-$400 each, but then I have to get them sold which takes time. My VM4 sold in a day (you people don't mess around here).
Really, I guess I'm not asking you to talk me out of it as I think I've set my mind to do it. I suppose I am more, saying goodbye, at least for now, and giving a heads up that you'll likely see Violet (my only named bass) on the classifieds in a few days.

Looks great, but it depends if you like the sound and feel. The 'best' and most expensive bass is worthless for YOU, when it doesn't work for you. Do you like one of your cheaper basses better? Sell it. Is it your favourite bass? Keep it.
Yes, you are right on that.
That's what's tricky on it. By feel, fit, finish, appearance, it is far and away my favorite. The attack, responsiveness, and dynamic range is also way beyond what any of my other basses do.
Ultimately though, I use my basses as song-writing tools and I haven't experienced that it has inspired any standout bass lines to this point. Where some of my other basses, which are inferior in pretty much every way, I pick up and feel instantly inspired. A lot of that is perspective, and I've experienced it before with the bass that has undoubtedly inspired more bass lines than any other of mine. In that case I changed to flats, swapped pickups, came back to rounds, and now it inspires me every time I pick it up.
I could try the same here, or I could use it to fund (or rather reimburse) the mic. Am leaning heavily towards the latter.
That's an awesome looking bass and based (bassed!) on the fact that my VM5 has become my #1 since bought it, my experience would recommend you to keep it. However, if as you describe above that it's failing to give you the inspiration you need to write music on and that is its primary purpose, then I guess you have your answer.
