I think the stock ones are Sandbergs own. The MM position is quite far back toward the bridge to be used by itself without boosting the bass IME and you'd probably find any replacement would have the same problem. The TM4 that I had sounded much better in that respect, as the MM pickup was a little further towards the neck.
I'm not sure what the Sandberg MM's sound like compared to my Delano or Haussel but the Sandberg P pickup is definitely more scooped than the Delano P.
I must admit that I fancied replacing my set with the Nordstrand Big Man and NP4a but for me the Delano's are working great now.

Is your bass a California?
According to the website the VM4 uses Sandberg's own pickups as they have for many years and the TM4 was always Delano. My VM4 was a very early one and had Delanos. I think they usually only put Haussels on their passive versions. The pre's are Sandberg specced made by Glockenklang.

I have the California vs and as far as I know the pickup is sandbergs, although the similarities between the big pole sandberg pickups and the Delano's makes me suspect that Delano are simply rebranding their own pickups for Sandbers as both companies are based in Germany. Anyhow the bass sounds incredible. Very clean sounding while retaining that p bass thump. I also have a Mayones Jabba (jazz) that also features actual Delano jazz pups. Although the bass is passive the sound is very tight, modern sounding. Much more bite than a regular jazz. I really like theses big pole pickups.

Great versatile variation on a passive Jazz bass. The pickups are Alnico2 which are warmer than the typical Alnico5. In normal (Varitone circuit bypassed) mode the bass sounds like a warm jazz with both pickups on and close to a P character with just the neck pickup. The middle position of the varitone acts as a kind of mid cut which I'm not keen on. The "Dirty mids/Jaco" setting gives you access to Jamerson like tones on the neck pickup and Jaco-esque tones on the bridge.
Blending pickups in this mode can give you other cool vintage tones, even sounding like a semi hollowbody (especially with a foam mute).
Super versatile if you're into the passive thing but choosing the right strings can make a big difference.

Until I scrolled down, I thought your reply was just "I have" with the picture. lol!

Thanks for the longer reply. It sounds like a very versitile bass with lots of possible tones. Jamerson-like tones is very nice to hear is possible from a Jazz bass.

What strings are you using on yours?

CLUB SANDBERG - Hey fellow TBassers, I noticed there was a Club Sanberg started in 2008 by NJXT2. In several of the threads like this one, I have seen many new request for Membership Numbers into the club that have gone unanswered. According the site, (Njxt2 was last seen: Jul 29, 2008), the original organizer has not been seen since 2008. Did anyone take over giving out numbers and managing the club? If so, please let me know who to get my number from. If not, I am happy to re-start and manage the club. Just need to know what LAST member number issued was. WHo has the last / most recent Sandberg Club number? Thanks, Thomas

Don't sell either!

I really wanted an Umbo, but they are rare second hand, especially in the U.K. I won't say I've settled for the MarloweDK, when I saw it snapped it up, but I would still dabble with another!

They're going nowhere :D. And neither are my California 11 VS4 or my older California PM4 (although I did flirt with the idea of moving that one on a few months ago:rollno:).

Really looking forward to getting my hands on the Sandberg, my other basses are G&L ASAT solid, ASAT Semi hollow and G&L L1500, it sounds like it will be tonally different and compliment what I have
