If its any consolation, Ron's Meatsmoke is heading to me so I would like to request a number and keep it in the club :)

After 12 months of rarely gigging with anything other than backline, I'm pretty sure this is the preamp for me. Financially, a bigger pedal takes up board space and will probably save me money in the long run too!

I hare ya. At this point gigging is a wild rarity in my life. This pre suits my needs across the board.

Speaking of Sunn - that's what I hear with the Meatsmoke. More Mesa than Ampeg imho, but the grind when you want it evokes the Sunn Gods from on high! I won't run the overdrive channel for most of my gigs, but it sure gives the head and the pedal another dimension.

I was at the front for their off-date headliner in Buffalo. Dan has his Sunn rig set up behind their scrims.

I hate to say it, but I think I might be putting my MS Pre up for sale as well - I'm finding that I kinda just really dig my rig on it's own. The MS makes everything thicker and louder, adds some nice growl…but I just don't know how well it works with my set up.

Thoughts?

Have you gigged with it yet? I felt kinda "meh" about mine until I played it loud at a gig. It was the first time my bass ever had that feel-in-the-gut tone.

Like any bass tonal thing... it sounds a lot different in the front of the house, or at least 20 feet in front of your amp, then it does sitting right in front of the cabs while practicing at home. (This I'm sure you know, but I'm putting it here for anyone else on the fence that might not have the experience to know this)

However, tube tone isn't for everyone. So, if that type of bass tone isn't your thing, than stick to what's best for you. Just please resale it at a price respectable to it's value.

Just wanna add. From the min I ordered mine, I thought of it as an amp, not an effect. The meatsmoke head was something I wanted for a while, and still kinda do, but couldn't afford one.But, after a good amount of time I realize that I prefer the Ampeg tone to the type that the meatsomke is similar to (fender/mesa, Ive been told).
I used the MS for the last time this weekend. My final thoughts are that it sounds incredible when cranked up. A tone that you feel as well as hear. And we all know that with overdriven sounds, it could be hard to find definition. I feel like at all the shows this weekend, that definition was there. Especially at the show we played yesterday at the middle east in boston, the MS sounded amazing in that room. So, I agree that it shines through best in live settings. I will miss it no doubt, but I learned alot about what I like, and the tone that I am after. Tubes are not always the answer.

Edit: So, I just spent an hour a/b'ing the Verellen pre with the VT bass first version. Definitely two differently voiced pedals. I like both, and I got great tones out of both. But at the end of the session, I really prefer the SVT tone. Of course Im gonna miss that huge warm tube sound and that awesome feeling in my chest. Oh, and the overdrive channel. I will no doubt miss that. One of my favorite OD's

I'm enjoying my Meatsmoke at home I don't gig and I play at bedroom levels and putting the Meatsmoke in the effects loop is where it really shines there is a huge difference between that and the front of the amp.

I ran it through the front of my M3 and I noticed a volume drop and it had that wet blanket sound after I put it through the effects loop it opened right up and sounds amazing. The M series has a great preamp and I love that sound but the Meatsmoke has a slightly different voice and really sounds better and I still have access to all of the tone controls on my amp as well.

Sorry bud, I don't have mine yet, but I can tell you right now there is not a very good chance of that happening. :)

I have pretty high hopes that it'll be a keeper, but really all I need is for it to sound better than my Sansamp, which won't take much...

With everyone dumping the MS Pre, I am starting to get a little nervous. Especially because I paid full price for the one I am awaiting. What about the pedal didn't meet your needs? I realize we are all hunting a subjective tone, but any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
