My recently acquired one. Jury is still out on it, but I like it so far. Too many basses to put this into full rotation, but it is definitely fun to change things up with. Neck dates August 8th 1980 & body dates July 16 1980 (as far as I can read through the finish goop in the neck pocket)
Glad you dig it bro it's a great bass with and incredibly low serial, I still have my Black Hog Maple and my Natural Ash Ebony 1K's Hope you Enjoy the bass as much as I did!

I really dig this thing. I have been playing it all weekend. I'm thinking a fretted one will have to make it's way to me sometime in July.

This one showed up just last night:
Trans red over mahogany (something I've never seen before) w/ ebony. She's well loved (a true "rustic" model, if you will), but she's all original and she's pure Wunkay all the way. Low serial number with neck and body dates from December of 1980 (large hex pole pieces).
Spent some time giving her a little TLC (that ebony board drank up a fair amount of lemon oil) and tweaking the setup. She could probably use a professional once over, but she's got all the makings to become my go-to bass. This one rounds out my 1K trio along with my '81 slot-pole natural/rosewood and my CAR/maple 2008 LE. We're a happy family, to say the least.
I'm off to add her to the registry right now ...

Here's my 81. A grab off eBay a few months ago. Oddly, the guy who sold it had picked it up off eBay himself like 2 weeks prior and decided it wasn't "collector" enough for him... dunno what he wasn't happy with, 'cause this thing is smokin! I love it more every time I pick it up.

Are you sure it's not maple? I've seen maple L1K bodies with clear finishes (including sunburst) that, at first glance, look like mahogany.

doesn't look like mahogany to me either, but, greg has a much more educated eye than I.....

I wondered that too before it arrived because I'd been told it was mahogany but the grain in the pic looked like it could go either way. And I was aware G&L did a few of these in maple, like you say, usually with clear finishes (a fact I think I gleaned from your site, which has proven to be a valuable resource). Took it on faith that the guy I bought it from knew what he was talking about, but I was a little nervous because the mahogany/ebony combo was really what I was after.
But nope, I took the neck off and there's no doubt she's a hog (and even if I were unsure what that looked like, I've got a maple SB-1 for comparison's sake).
Side note: Since I know you're heavy into the G&L research at the moment, GG, you might be interested to know that my SB-1, which is virtually identical to the '85 displayed on your site, still sports the PBX pup although the neck and body dates are March and April of '86 respectively. Found that a bit surprising when I first removed the neck to check her age. I was expecting something that would put it closer to the "prototype" category. That's G&L for you, I guess. I figure it must be one of the last of its kind since I've seen others claiming to be of early '86 vintage that are MFD equipped. (The PBX is no second-rate pup though.)
