Coffee Quotes and Stories

Confused as hell, perplexed as crap, not getn it as..... a lot. :wideyed:

Clearly, I need more coffee. :wacky:
AIUI it's always sweet, strong, and black. This is "very fine ground coffee and sugar heated just to the brink of boiling in a long-handled cezve" and is not filtered, so there's a generous helping of sludge in the bottom of the (tiny) cup.

Which attributes you assign to love, death, and hell may vary depending on your mood or what the Fates have dealt you lately.

I was coming home from the South Coast, some time back, long trip, almost at the limit of my potential to keep on truckin', so I ducked off the ring-road for coffee. Gloria Jean's presented itself so I planted myself there, after ordering a supersizzled serving of Gloria's best. After a minute, I thought I'd save the barista a journey to my table and sidled up to the counter. She had her back to me and was, I discovered soon after, conjuring up my order.

I watched on in horror, gobsmacked, as a regular sized espresso was unceremoniously dumped into a supersized paper cup before it was topped up with boiling water and barely a splash of milk. She turned 'round, saw me standing there, and swallowed hard. I pretended not to have noticed, said thank you and waddled off to my table. I think I might've had a mischievous grin on my face as I sat down and readied myself for this pitiful partial placebo — one that, miraculously, did do the trick despite Gloria's godless grafting. As the slop cooled, I sat there grinning, thinking. If my dosage calculations were correct, this woman had just moved the decimal point one place to the left and then charged me double for it before signing my death warrant, charged and condemned to die in a ditch with a chronic caffeine deficiency.

That alone was enough to keep me grinning like a maniac and bolt-upright in the driver's seat, for the duration of the journey. Since that near fateful evening, I've never once considered chancing my luck at any coffee joint that comes anywhere remotely near the nature of that inglorious Jean's and her disingenuous, dozy den of inequity. I still get mileage, recounting that memorable little misadventure, whenever I find myself twilight zoning out and craving a good, hefty cuppa.

Pretty much says it all....

Speaking of coffee and women, when I was a teenager my Dad shared a saying he'd heard thrown about by certain white men where he grew up in the South. The saying was, "I like my coffee with cream and sugar but I take my women black." He didn't particularly like what that suggested and even as a teenager it bothered me, as well. The way it was explained to him was that these white men would have a woman of color on the side but were not willing to be seen in public with them. And they enjoyed bragging about it to each other (while at the coffee shop or at the bar).

Fast forward about 37 years to when I started writing songs. I decided to mock that saying and those who think that way by turning the line around. The title of the song was 'I Take It Black'. Words and music copyrighted. It was a simple 12-bar I, IV, V with a IV, I, II, V bridge. The first three verses were about coffee, the last two verses were about prejudice. It was always gratifying to have folks call out, "Play the coffee song." :)

The chorus was...

"I take it black
I take it black
I take it black
I take it black
I like my women with cream and sugar
But I take my coffee black"

Edit: You can listen to the song on SoundCloud, both studio and live versions, if you're so inclined. I just opened up an account. Account name...blowinblue
