Cold Turkey

I will have to go to NYC next January for a meeting. Since that is the home of Sadowsky Guitars, should I go GAS cold turkey until then? It seems there is always a good deal floating around, but I know if I don't start saving now, I won't be able to get a cool bass if I see something I like at Sadowsky's shop. I know how easily I yield to temptation, but I really would like to be in a position to whip out some cash if I see a keeper in the early New Year!:)

The rest of this year will be rough if I can hold out.:help:

Dr. Cheese, you have been around long enough to know that GAS is a very serious, complicated and financially crippling illness. IF you actually CAN hold out until January, please, please PLEASE right a self-help book for the rest of us! :)

the damage that I may do between now and January....:rollno:

Now, if you can wait - do it. A trip to Roger's Shop is something to look forward to.

I'm going to give it a shot. I'm not sure that I can make it, but it is nice to give myself a goal for the nine months or so.:)

Doc,

Good luck holding off the GAS. I have to say, and I mean this in the most loving way possible, but you're a bigger gearslut than even myself. I am up to 13 basses, oops, 14. I need to thin the herd myself. If you do hold out, I'll be the first to congratulate you on your mastery or overcoming GAS.

I know I'm a whore and a half when it comes to gear!:hiding: Even today, I'm considering a swap, but I am serious about not buying.;) I just know this will be a huge challenge for me.:cool:

I know rationality and GAS don't really mix, but I'll give it a shot. ;) I think you should calculate your GAS-related expenses or losses for the past few years. This could be depressing, and I certainly don't have the fortitude for it, but perhaps you do. Then, figure out the average for a nine month period. If that's less than a round trip ticket to N.Y.C., visit Roger immediately! :bassist: Cold turkey sucks. Plus, Sadowsky prices could go up for 2009, and how would you feel then? Remember, this is rationality, not enabling. That just wouldn't be right.

I have a Sadowsky 4 and a 5 and rarely play my Fenders or Stingrays. I use them to play at home and at practice but rarely gig them these days.

Sadowskys didn't intitially cure my GAS as I kept buying stuff looking for that perfect tone. After a few months giging the Sadowskys, my other basses are finally starting to collect dust.

Also, I am almost 5 weeks without even thinking about a new purchase.:hyper:

like a lot of you guys, I've tried many, many basses. I still have a Sterling, and a bass I bought in Japan. What it comes down to though is which bass I will consistently pick up no matter the situation. Roger makes basses that you can pick up and play at anytime and anywhere. That's what killed my GAS. I do not need any other basses. Sure it would be nice to have others, but when it comes to necessity, Sadowsky destroys GAS everytime.

Doc, you know how when Tiger Woods plays in a tournament, people bet on either "Tiger", or the "Rest of Field"? Sorry buddy, but with your history, my money is on the "Rest of Field"! ;)

However....... That being said, if you CAN hold out that long, I think you'll really like the Sadowsky's. I love my UV70. And it's the only one I've ever played. I can just imagine how cool it would be to sit in the shop surrounded by them!

I don't blame you.:smug: If I were a betting man, I would bet against me too!:p As I said, visiting Roger's shop gives me something to shoot for, actually buying a Sadowsky is not even that important to me. I simply would like to be in a position to buy one if something catches my eye if I visit the shop. I know I can't do that if I go through 2-5 budget basses between now and next January.

We do need a TB club for bassists holding out for Mr. or Ms. "Right." I think the idea of holding out until January is attractive because I have bought way too many basses that were "good deals" that I really could have done without. Similarly, I have sold or traded away too many good basses simply because the grass looked greener. Taking a ddep breath and holding out is a way to make sure that when I do buy, I'm getting something I really want and that will fill a need.;)
