Double Bass College Auditions

What is the deal with CCMs auditions? Their requirements are a scale, an etude, excerpts and a movement of a sonata which is way different than any other school except Julliard. I have heard alot of people play other stuff and get accepted. As one of my top choices is playing something other than the written requirements ok?

I just heard from USC already: accepted + a finalist for a half-tuition merit scholarship. HUGE relief to have this news already. Since I still have the rest of my auditions ahead of me, I'm waiting to make any decisions, but I'm excited to have studying with David Moore at USC as an option.

just outta curiosity, BU's guidelines request two solos, an etude, and scales... I've heard though that schools requesting these items end up wanting to hear excerpts anyways, instead of etudes, etc. I've prepared all of the above, but I was just wondering if anyone could shed some light.

Yeah, I've heard from people who auditioned last year that they don't actually ask for the etude. Also, apparently they do ask for excerpts, even though its not listed in their audition rep requirements on their website.

Having auditioned at Bu twice, it may be ok to play something else, but when Ed asks which étude you're about to play you don't want to be the guy without the requirements. In my experience most teachers aren't very familiar with the requirements for the school but there is always someone else who may be more by the book who could see your audition and ask where the other stuff is.
Also, in these competitive schools with only a few openings, how certain can anybody be that their playing is enough to make up for a repertoire list the teacher didn't ask for?

Thanks for the response. Did you hear about whether or not the scales are requested as well?

and congrats on USC, that's a really big accomplishment.

Thanks! I heard that scales are not requested at BU, but it probably wouldn't a bad idea to keep working on them. It's a part of my practice routine either way.

Anyone know how many spots at BU this year? Particularly Ed's studio?

Mike - Ed should have at least one spot.

As far as audition requirements, as with all auditions, be ready to play anything. It would be unfortunate to add more stress to the audition process by crossing your fingers before you've even played. When I auditioned for schools I was asked to play an etude (at BU, actually), sight-read, even a two octave scale. At a certain level, prospective students shouldn't worry about these being requirements because they are all part of a well-balanced practice structure. The audition itself is really just checking in on your work, making sure you're really serious. Beyond that, play anything they ask for as well as you can -- it only improves your chances. Good luck everyone!

Mine was OK. A little different than the others so far (Rice and USC). Mine was relatively short - all they asked for was for two solos. I just did the Courante from Suite 1 and first movement of Kouss. I was really surprised and bummed I didn't get to play any excerpts, since I felt that excerpts were the strongest part of my previous auditions. I played pretty well but the brevity of the audition was kind of disappointing.
