Double Bass College Auditions

Mine went pretty well. This was my first audition yet and I reverted back to an old fingering in the Bottesini cadenza and got a little lost but hey, its a cadenza and i'll just say it was supposed to sound that way. The prelude from suite 1 went really well and I was asked to play the Trio from Beethoven 5. And the room we were in I really liked

edit: and yeah I was bummed the audition was kept to as close to 10 minutes as possible, but I did like how they were on schedule and the whole audition process seemed pretty fool proof; plenty of info was given at and beforehand on what to do so that was nice.

I don't want to diverge from the topic of the thread but I was wondering what happens if a student gets accepted to a music school but turns it down? Does the school usually have waiting list and goes down the list for other students that have auditioned? It is something I have always wondered and would be great for places like Peabody and IU that are pretty competitive.

If a student gets accepted and goes elsewhere, there's a wait list that they go through.

How'd you guys do at Curtis? I'm pretty happy with how my audition went - being the last audition I didn't really sweat it and just had fun with it. Hal and Edgar were both so nice and the audition was comfortable and didn't seem rushed at all or anything. Good luck to everyone as decisions start to come out.

I know 14 people were scheduled for the Fourth. Mike do you know how many were going on the Fifth? And yeah there is only one spot this year as clarified by Hal and Edgar.

The audition was such a great experience, I got to play all of the First Suite Prelude, the Exposition and Cadenza of the Bottesini then about half of the Second movement. Then I played Heldenleben ant 9 and Mozart 35 4th Mov. recapitulation at the third page. Got some pointers from both Hal and Edgar and I couldn't have asked for a better audition experience. And The Coffee Bar is a great place for lunch.

I'm not sure exactly how many people on the 5th - I left right after my audition. I do know that there were 5 people in the morning session, when I auditioned, and I'm sure much more in the afternoon.

And yeah, I agree it was so awesome to have gotten feedback from Hal and Edgar. I think their audition procedure had a really good balance between enough professionalism to be efficient but casual enough in the audition to be comfortable. I had a lot of fun with it.
