Hey,
Im a student at the U. of North Texas. I audition, by tape on electric bass and didn't know a damn thing about jazz, or upright bass and I got in. I guess they saw "potential" or something?? Anyway, UNT is a great place for jazz and the upright bass. I learned real quick about the upright when i got here, never having played it before then. My skills quickly came together and started playing with other people on it and soon after a year or so i was in the 9' o clock lab band.
Before i got here though, i definatly heard my own voice as an electric bassist. Then i learned a little upright and very glad i did. There is no reason to limit yourself to the electric. Today I still feel that electric is my voice but i got the upright as a choice too. Its a good feeling.
OVerall UNT is a pretty heavy bebop place. There is a good deal of electric playing here, but it is definatly optional. The emphasis is for sure on the big mean nasty UPRIGHT!!! Look out for the jazz snobs here too. But im sure they are everywhere that you could go to school. There everywhere.
Sorry if i Rambled on,
email me if you have any more questions about UNT
Chris
