I'm another who plays "not for pay" as my motivation. I'm in a surf band called "Vintage Winds" (code for Old Farts). It's basically a hobby band that plays out occasionally, but only a few times a year. We pick band members with personality as a first priority.
I don't have the time to practice 4-6 hours a week, nor do I have the time to play out on a regular basis if I wanted to. Much too busy with work and other commitments. But it's great to get together once a week or so for a couple of hours, polish up a couple of new tunes every now and then, and look for benefits or other things we can do to help support the community.
