US: West Colorado Club

I'm another who plays "not for pay" as my motivation. I'm in a surf band called "Vintage Winds" (code for Old Farts). It's basically a hobby band that plays out occasionally, but only a few times a year. We pick band members with personality as a first priority.

I don't have the time to practice 4-6 hours a week, nor do I have the time to play out on a regular basis if I wanted to. Much too busy with work and other commitments. But it's great to get together once a week or so for a couple of hours, polish up a couple of new tunes every now and then, and look for benefits or other things we can do to help support the community.

I've known Ben for a quite a while from my previous band, so I just popped him an email. They have really nice venues/PAs, however don't pay a ton (if anything), so if money's not a problem I say go for it. If they like your music, they'll put you on before some national acts. A lot bands I know got in with SJ by simply being available last minute to open for bands. They have a lot of people flake out, and often need last minute openers. If you bring a decent crowd and sound good, they will definitely ask you back.

You can say that again. I mean its cool to play and all, but give the dog a bone too.

Being in a band, you hope to play enough gigs to make money and record something. You won't accomplish this playing shows like that. I am just lucky enough to know a few people. My band should be gigging out within the next month or so.

We have a couple gigs coming up in November for Denver if any of you feel so inclined!

Nov. 5th We are opening the Young Cities EP release show. These guys are really good. They recorded at East West studios in Los Angeles and it sounds really great. the show is 6 bucks and at the Hi-dive on Broadway/Ellsworth Anyway, here is the facebook event: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=120641651321389

Nov. 16th we are opening for Lizzie Huffman at Illegal Pete's on 16th st. mall. She is a folk/country singer from Seattle (possibly relocating to Denver). I believe this is free. So come have a burrito and drink some beer with us!

Guys - I got an email from somebody at Afton Live, soliciting their services as booking agents. In this email, they offered to add us to an "All Ages" show they have booked at the Hi-Dive, but offered no other information about their services or fees.

It was either a vague and very poorly written sales pitch or there's something unpalatable about their approach. I sent the guy a series of questions in response, and of course he has not answered.

Has anyone worked with this outfit?

EDIT: never mind. I found this thead, among others, that discusses Afton in detail. I don't think they are a pay-to-play outfit as many in that thread suggest, but it does seem like their approach is a horrible value for any band with a modicum of draw.

My band got an email from "Nemesis Entertainment" about playing a fest called Fourth Fret. We responded out of curiosity, and much like you, have not had a response yet.

There is a new management company in Denver called Vinefield that is supposedly doing really well. I am friends with a few bands on their roster and they seem happy.

Update: I did get another email from the Afton rep. He answered none of the questions I had asked him about their service and had set up an account for the band.

The guy suggested that I log in to their system, populate the account with relevant information about the band, and then talk to him further about Afton's services. Of course I declined.

Well, this isn't Denver, but my surf band Vintage Winds is playing at the Duke of Windsor (In Windsor, south of Fort Collins) on Friday Dec. 10th. We're opening for Been There Done That, a blues and classic rock band.

My band plays from 9-10 PM and BTDT takes over after that. Come on up and have a brew!
