Come on another expensive Fender

Seems like a joke. The fretboard / pickups / electronics don't seem relic'd.

The roadworns allowed people to look like they've been playing for 30 years or had some vintage gear. (nothing against that)

I hope someone buys this and tells people stories about how their bass survived all kinds of amazing feats. It could be the chuck norris of basses.

Five to one that bass never gets played on a stage. Some rich a**clown will buy it and store it in a humidity-controlled room so he can show it off to his friends. What a waste of the time of a master builder.

Sadly... true.

As to this instrument's quality... don't kid yourself: I know enough about manufacturing to surmise that this bass started as a run-of-the mill bass that someone either dropped or a machine tool gouged -- So Fender takes these "2nds" and "Relics" them, and charges MORE for it. Brilliant cost control!

This particular one might well have started as a custom shop J-bass reissue that got dropped or gouged or something... So rather than waste a $4000 bass, the smart folks at fender went nuts with the blow-torch and sander. Again, BRILLIANT!!!

This makes me wonder... Has fender ever "re-issued" any of the Strats that Jimi burned up? I recall Frank Zappa bought one of his toasted strats, had it fixed enough to play and then toured with it... Any guitards out there know if Fender ruins strats too?

"Why buy new when you can buy used at like new prices?" Next they're going to start selling basses that have been pre-smashed and call it an ultra-heavy relic job. "Hey guy! Lookie! The headstock's broke clean off, you can't even play it, cool huh? And at only $7,000 you'd have to be an autistic alcoholic idiot not to buy it!"
or better yet some big dude comes to your house and beats you with the bass for a mere $30K, you wake up in the hospital(additional charges apply) addicited to morphine, so that way both you and the bass look like you've "Seen the Road BRO!" This whole relic (POSER) instrument fad is just silly.
You know what reliced basses remind me of? Business guys riding really nice new Harleys, with clean leathers, studded leather saddle bags, the cheesy black skull bandana, neatly trimmed goatee, onboard GPS and the "risky" middle age house wife that thinks she's "livin' on the edge" riding on back. Wannabes. Real bikers, the drunks I grew up around, are really screwed up, and scary.

Perhaps this is a sociological experiment! What if some PhD at Fender decided to see *just how gullible* folks are? They've proven that folks will buy beat up instruments for more than nice new ones... so why not take it to the extreme to see what will happen?

I never saw the point of buying a "relic" bass or one that was even more beat up for that kind of money. I can buy a new good looking bass and add my own mojo. I think it's sad how folks will pay to have someone add artificial wear and tear and pay a pretty penny for it.

...I bet Leo is spinning in his grave.:scowl:

Putting aside the funny comments....pretty funny too...

One of the major points of buying a relic'd bass from the custom shop is so you can leave home your very expensive vintage bass and take this bass out on the road without a concern. When you put such a huge price tag on it it TOTALLY defeats the purpose.

If your going to get into that price point it would just make sense to buy the real thing...A pre CBS bass.
